Christmas Junkie TOP 50
Man Attempts to Put Christmas Tree in Courthouse
From York Daily Record       Ask a Question   Discuss in the Merry Forum

(York, PA)-- Adrian "Buddy" King wants to put up a 30-foot "Twelve Days of Christmas" tree in the York County Judicial Center as a fundraiser for the arts.

The tree would be decorated with 78 handcrafted ornaments of the gifts mentioned in the popular holiday song, including the 12 drummers drumming, five gold rings and partridge in a pear tree.

Those ornaments would then be auctioned at the end of the holiday season, such as at First Night York, to raise money for the arts in York County.

"It would be the most dramatic, beautiful tree you laid your eyes on," the 59-year-old York man told county commissioners Monday morning.

Commissioners said that, while they like the idea, they would have to check to see if it would be permissible under building code restrictions and security concerns.

President Commissioner Lori Mitrick explained to King that officials wanted to put an information desk in the atrium of the judicial center so that volunteers could help direct people where to go in the building.

But officials couldn't put a combustible desk in because of the smoke evacuation system, which is designed to clear smoke out of the atrium so people can see to get out in case of a fire.

Fire officials had warned that if the county put a combustible desk in the atrium, it would throw all of the testing out of whack, George Meshew, the county's executive director of facilities management, told commissioners at the time.

King said he has checked to see if other downtown buildings might be suitable for the tree, but he thinks the judicial center is ideal.

He envisions the tree being a holiday attraction and proposes opening the judicial center after-hours a few days a week for people to enjoy it. Maybe high school bands could provide entertainment, King said.

King acknowledged that someone may raise a concern about the separation of church and state. He said he would try to make the tree as diverse as possible.

"We'll at least do the groundwork and look into it," Mitrick said.
