Paramount Pictures is developing a new movie exploring the origins of Santa Claus. Paramount has optioned the novel "Kringle", by writer Tonny Abbott. The live-action epic will feature warriors, battles and fairies as it explores the origin of the Kris Kringle myth and how Christmas came to be.
Paramount has tapped Mark Dindal to direct the film. Dindal directed and received story credit for Disney's "Chicken Little" and is developing "Sherlock's Secretary" at Walden Media.
Abbot's tale is a fantastical one. As a kid, Kris lives in a dark wood with an old woman named Merwen. On the longest day of every year, goblins come to steal and enslave children. The boy escapes, but his guardian is captured, so he goes on a journey to find her, battling evil along the way with the help of elves.
No dates for this project have been announced but most industry observers predict this project might not hit theaters until Christmas of 2009.
