Today was my last day of work before maternity leave begins. As I left my office, I knew that I needed to make a stop for some last minute Thanksgiving items that I forgot to pick up earlier in the week. I decided to go to Trader Joes. I'm not sure if all of you are familiar with this store but it's what I would call an "unusual" market. It's a combination of natural, organic and out of the ordinary items. I bought a Tiramisu here a few years back and my family feels that Thanksgiving isn't complete without it.
So, I walk into the store and gather the items that I need but notice that they do not have my family's treasured dessert. Instead, I choose something similar and disappointedly approach the checkout. The cashier politely asks, "Did you find everything you were looking for?" I say, "Well, everything but the Tiramisu. It looks like you're sold out." She then has someone look for it. Meanwhile, I pay for my items and wait. I don't mind waiting as the atmosphere in this store was so cheerful with everyone wishing everyone else a wonderful holiday and all of the cashiers wearing turkey hats that look like actual turkeys! 25 minutes later, they come to me with the dessert. If you can imagine my excitement think Christmas Vacation when Clark sees the Griswold family christmas tree in the middle of the forest!
They hand one to me and say, "Happy Thanksgiving"! I say, "I didn't pay for this yet." Another cashier says, "Here...take 2 and thanks for waiting so long. These are on us!" I couldn't believe it! Who does that these days? It was so nice to see something so out of the ordinary and I actually felt the spirit of the season. I'm going to have to do the same for someone else now to return the favor.
