First of all, remember that figures don't lie -- but liars do figure.

Second - buying seemed to be extremely selective - on carefully chosen deeply discounted items, resulting in much lower profits to the retailers.

We would all LIKE to buy more presents (those of us with jobs, that is) --- but we know that we need to save money for the billions and billions of dollars bailing out our banks.
