It could be a solo artis or band, new or old.

Personaly i think this is a hard one, who could write and sing a new christmas tune that could capture the spirit of the season. Slade, the pouges, wizzard managed to do it but its been years since a really really good tune came out.

Never thought about it. I enjoy all the classics so much I guess I did not feel the need for new ones. There have been a few over the years, but none I like nearly as much as the ones that are played year after year and really say it all for the season.

Good question but I am still stuck on old school stuff. If Bing Crosby or Perry Como were still around that is who I want to sing it! I am curious to see what others have to say. cheesy

Yeah heard a bit of celtic women on youtube and are good, Enya is fantastic too-especialy in Gaelic, wounderful.

But to be honest i find the christmas number one (in UK) has lost its magic due to X Factor. They are now virtualy guaranteed to be number one and have nothing christmasy about them at all-i no alot dont but im not a fan of the singers. HOWEVER saying that i do like the final show of X factor when they all sing christmas tunes with other famous singers or groups. If they made an effort and made a christmas song then i think that would be a bit better. An also when X factor starts (next Saturday) then you know xmas is not too far away (as the aim is to have an xmas number 1)

Michael Buble, Harry Connick Jr. or Josh Groban. They all have that classic throwback feel. I also like Sarah McLachlan's "wintersong". I am huge fan of the crooner's when it comes to Christmas songs.

Well just like everybody else I love the old classics, but one that came to mind for me was The Corrs.

You can't get any better than the classics. I can't even think of the most recent "classic." I'm going to answer Donny Osmond....just because. (What can I say? I'm a huge fan.) He's very capable. I'm sure a few country stars could, too.

It's hard for me to imagine any of the current pop stars doing a new Christmas tune although I think Harry Connick Jr. could do it. I think back to the more recent classics. Mel Torme who co authored the "Christmas Song", made famous by Nat King Cole, did his first and only Christmas CD in the 90's. He put a new spin on a number of tunes including a jazzy version of "Good King Wenceslas" that was outstanding.

Kings of Convenience (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:hzfuxqwkldae~T00) are a folk-pop duo who remind me of Simon & Garfunkel. They could do traditional very well.

A beautiful example of their work:

I've seen this thread at another forum but not here.

Tom Waits ("Silent Night" & "A Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis" are the only Christmas tunes I've heard him belch.)

Joan Armatrading (never heard anything Christmas from her.)

Marshall Crenshaw (He already has a few Christmas tunes on comp albums.)

Southern Culture On The Skids (listen for their "Merry Christmas Baby" on the next Mistletoe Mix.)

In thirty-seven years of cranking out great tunes, Joan Armatrading still hasn’t contributed anything for Christmas. At least, not anything I’ve heard. Something original from Joan would be a welcomed addition!

Perhaps Tom Waits should give it another shot. I could never understand why his “Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis” never caught on.

I would like to hear Darius Rucker do a christmas album. I loved him with hootie and the blow fish and like him even more now that he is doing country. With Darius out front, Hootie & The Blowfish did a cover version of Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song” for the Special Olympic compilation “A Very Special Christmas 3” in 1997.

Did anyone catch Darius on Turner Network Television’s (TNT) annual “Christmas In Washington” concert last year (2008)? If so, what did he sing? - http://news.turner.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=4089

In 1995 I happened to catch Darius on a National Public Radio show called “Yule Tunes with Don Dixon & Marti Jones.” Darius crooned “Sad At Christmas This Year” that I had never heard before by anyone nor have I heard since. I don’t know if the song was original or from someone else. In 2005 I used the song on the family’s annual Christmas CD compilation as a Seasonal farewell to my Mom who passed earlier that year. I think the CD is still airing on Merry Christmas Radio.

I’m pretty sure Darius has performed other Christmas tunes as well, but it sure would be nice to have him release a complete Christmas album of his own!

I like the melodic harmonies of the sister act, Mulberry Lane... they do a really ROCKING version of the old Beach Boys "Little Saint Nick"... here's an example of some of their holiday music...

And, of course, the new Christmas album from kid's music band, The Hipwaders should be good... featuring Yes, It's Christmas... with video slideshow montage with Christmas cartoon characters by some guy we all know... cheesy

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones released two Christmas songs that flew virtually under the radar in the new millenium although one has received radio play throughout the U.S. during each Holiday season.

I was quite surprised when I heard "Christmas Time" by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones on the radio back home. It was certainly a nice feeling. It's not a happy Christmas song as it is basically a jab at the commercialisation of Christmas, but it still has a great feel and sound to me.

Their other Christmas song, "This Time of Year," is very upbeat and happy. It always makes me smile. Their is a short dual saxophone solo where they bust out a bit of "Jingle Bells," which is very well done, too. These songs are certainly classics to me as they are constants in my Christmas music rotation.

In recent (ish) times the best 'modern' christmas tune (and my fave non carol christmas song) has to be The Pouges feat Kirsty MCcall (Sadly passed away). It just aint christmas if i dont have it playing at least 5000 times in decembercheesy.

Band Aid was/is good but they shouldnt really re do it any more as the third one was prettu bad (especialy having the rap bit in it?????)

Enya would do a great modern carol (shes done a few christmas songs and sings a few in gaelic). Though it would be nice to have an up tempo modern rock/pop christmas tune like slades Merry christmas everybody or Wizzards I wish i could be christmas everyday.
