We are doing something a little different this year. We are having *gasp* venison, Coca-Cola ham, cornbread and wild rice stuffing, mashed potatoes/gravy, collards, watergate salad, crescent rolls, spiced cider, pudding cookies, a few different types of pies, eggnog, and of course lots and lots of other goodies.

It's the first year I'll be making christmas dinner (usually it's my mom but this year my husband and I are spending it just the two of us) - turkey, stuffing, roast potatoes, honey roast parsnips, brussel sprout mash with bacon and roast chestnuts, cranberry sauce, and I haven't decided yet on how I'm going to do the carrots, I'm deciding between two recipes. I keep finding new recipe ideas though and I imagine added to this will be leftovers from christmas eve (cranberry nut roast, ham etc). Think that might be a bit too much for the two of us? Meh, it's christmas, bring it on! :)

Coca-Cola ham is when you soak a ham in Coca-Cola for a day or two in the fridge. Then once it is fuly soaked you put it (the ham) into a roasting pan. You then take fresh Coca-Cola and mix it with some brown suger or my favorite, King Syrup. You put those two ingredients in a pan and simmer it for 5 to 8 minutes. Use that as a glaze. I normally put pineapple, marschino cherries and cloves on top of the ham before I put the glaze on it. I bake it as the directions state and about 25 to 30 minutes before it is done I pour more of the glaze over it. I haven't done this ham in a few years so it will be a treat. I honestly like it better than the brown sugar or honey glazed hams. I did tell Mr. HJ that next year I am cheating and going to Honey Baked Ham Co. for our ham. As for the Hee-Haw Show, I LOVED watching that as a kid. OMG am I telling my age? Actually when I watched it it was all reruns, but hey sometimes reruns are the best.

And no that doesn't sound like too much. It is going to be just Mr. HJ and I as well. But I do not think I will be able to do our dinner until later in the evening. We normally spend most of the day at his parents, and now that his dad is gone- we are going to make sure that we spend a good portion with his mom and family. I remember how my mom got after my dad passed and I sure would not want my MIL geting that way, although I seriously doubt she ever would but hey there is always a chance.

That sounds delicious, I'm cooking ham for our christmas eve dinner so I'm going to give that a go! Thanks for posting instructions! :)

I have to get together with my family yet to decide. We do something different every year because we get so much turkey at various Christmas parties, by Christmas we are wanting something different.

you mentioned coca cola ham and it reminded me that this summer I found a cook book "classic cooking with coca-cola"by Elizabeth Candler Graham, the great-great granddaughter of Asa Griggs Candler the founder of Coca-cola. It is loaded with recipes all using coke in some way. I think I may try the one for ham, it sounds good!

Inspired by this thread I've now made my final decisions about the menu. Over Christmas we tend to have three big meals, Christmas Eve Eve, Christmas Eve, and then Christmas Day (with Boxing Day whatever leftovers we have). So, Christmas Eve Eve is going to be Cranberry nut roast, scored roast potatoes with thyme and sea salt, parsnip and chestnut croquettes, and glazed carrots with cider. Christmas Eve is going to be ham in Coca Cola, braised red cabbage with apples and sherry vinegar, mashed potatoes, and any leftovers from the previous night. Finally Christmas Day is going to be turkey, stuffing, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, brussels sprouts with bacon and chestnuts, maple and pecan carrots, broccoli, and cranberry sauce (plus leftover ham etc).

We're not making a pudding as such this year so dessert is just going to be snacks: cookies, chocolates, stollen, mince pies, that kind of thing :)
