Not sure if this question is even in the correct forum, but I'll ask away. Seeing how many fans of classic TV specials there happens to be, here, I was was wondering if anyone collects the figures and such from Rudopph and other various specials?

Playing Mantis and Memory Lane put out a line of Rudolph 'action' figures as well as A Charlie Brown Christmas and Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town and perhaps a few pieces from, A Year Without A Santa Claus.

I know Hawthorne Village has a Rudolph Village and there's an awesome looking Rudolph cuckoo clock!

Anyone collect any of these items?

I have a couple of them. I have the cave playset with baby Rudolph, Donner, and his mother (Mrs. Donner??) that plays sound bites from the movie. Rudolph's nose lights when you press his tail and it comes with a little red removable jingle bell set. I have another of the grown up Rudolph and a white, snowy base that has a clear plastic pole for Rudolph to mount on making him appear to be taking off. His nose lights in the same way. I could take some pictures of it. I also have Rudolph edition Monopoly.

I have way too much of the stuff, not as much as some, but for this apartment, I have way more than I really need. I love them all, though and even was able to pick up three more action figures, today...new packaging and that's what threw me off to thinking I might not have them!

Oh, I want that Rudolph Monopoly game so much! :)

So there's new ones (at least newly produced in new packaging) this year? It seems like they were getting hard to find last year, and I couldn't find many of them. I really need at least Santa to round out my cave scene.

The Rudolph Monopoly is fun, and the figurines are my favorite part. I got it at JC Penny last year. I want to say I got it for like $25, but I'm not sure.

I have a complete set of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Christmas ornies. I bought them right after (whoever owns the rights now) they released them for the first time. They are too heavy to put on a tree so I bring them to work and set them up on my desk.

So there's new ones (at least newly produced in new packaging) this year?

Yes, the packaging is definitely new and I might prefer the new look, but the jury is still out on that. I have a ton of figures that I actually have placed on my computer room walls, hallway wall and some in the bedroom. I have some pieces that are open and I set up small displays at Christmas, but way too many for the room I have.

I have seen the Rudolph Monopoly on eBay, but the prices are usually high and if the price isn't too bad, the shipping will kill me. I saw the game at Barnes & Noble, last year, but certainly couldn't buy myself anything during the holidays and while shopping with my Dad and youngest brother, I pointed the game out, as they were commenting on how much I love that special and thought Dad might pick it up, as he claimed he needed an idea or two, but I received, in addition to my other great gifts from Dad, a couple of GREAT looking Denever Broncos caps, so that was a nice surprise! :D

I have a pretty nice Bumble Hallmark ornament my girlfriend picked up on clearance last year. I'm fortunate it didn't get ruined when our garage flooded. The box is destroyed but luckily the ornament was fine.

Wow! Misfit Toy, nice collection. :D Looking over the figures and such, I think I have many of the same, but can't put too many out on display for a serious lack of room. A few years ago, we went shopping one morning and took my then, 3 year old nephew with us. That was back when K-Mart seemed to carry the Rudolph, Santa Claus Is Comin; to Town and Charlie Brown figures and we hit a small gold mine of Rudolph goodies. We were filling the cart up and had my nephew sitting in the front of the cart and even began putting boxes of figures around him and he finally declared, he thought we had enough. One of the items was the Santa and the sleigh....I was thrilled to locate that!

I was so lucky I snatched him up online early enough before his prices started going up. I got him a couple years ago off ebay. The prices with this line fluctuate a lot.

I actually found one at not a bad price, if anyone is interested. Chances are the prices will rise as the holidays get close, like i said, I've seen them go in the hundreds before. The tree lights up and also plays music too, its really great and makes a fantastic display piece:

Well, I'm not above giving it a try.....of course, they may escort me out of the place, but I'd say that's a very non-holiday attitude to take! :(

While at Wal*Mart on Saturday, we came across some musical/animated figures from Rudolph.....Rudolph, Sam the Snowman and one Bumble. They are about 15" in height and talk/sing and I see Sam's Cheecks glow an icy blue. My biggest complaint about the 'talking/singing' aspect of many of these figures is, they don't use original voices. I wonder if this is due to some legal issue or if they simply feel most people don't care? For my money, I'd prefer the original voice characterizations. 8-)

Ervserver
10-31-2006, 01:12 PM
That's a good question, perhaps they would have to fork over some royalties to the people who did the original voices.

dominick
10-31-2006, 01:32 PM
Well Burl Ives passed in '95, though I'm sure there is no lack of greedy people lurking in his estate.

ChristmasFanatic
11-01-2006, 07:14 AM
I think it's a shame when original voices aren't used. Obviously, if someone has passed on, you can't expect them to do anything new, but most of these musical figures are supposed to be singing and quoting from the original special, so why not pay up and let us have the voices we know and love?

Ervserver
11-01-2006, 07:16 AM
I would think it would make for more sales, kids know if the voice is different or not.

This is very true. My nieces and nephews are still young enough that I didn't think they'd notice, but they were quite put off by the fact that original voices weren't used. Nobody can be Sam the Snowman better than Burl Ives! :D

It's almost like a slap in the face when you hear the Sam talk for the first time. I certainly wasn't expecting that voice! :(

I was in a Hallmark Store, this morning and saw the neatest snow/water globe. It has Sam and Rudolph inside and it looks almost like the cover of the CD for the soundtrack for the TV classic. I wanted to pick it up for myself in the worst way, but as I was supposed to be Christmas shopping for others, I was behaved and left it sitting at the store.

Christy Carol
11-03-2006, 02:16 PM
I have a question to ponder...do you think the estate of Burl Ives won't let them use his voice? I mean did he sign away his rights when he was on the show so they could use it in future endeavors, if not I wonder if that is what prevents them?

Wonder how we could find that out? Could explain alot.

Maybe some people don't see it as being all that important to have original voices, when possible, but it just seems so wrong to me.

I was 'gifted' with a couple of Rudolph goodies from the Hallmark Store, yesterday. One was an adorable and very nice looking snow/water globe with Sam and Rudolph inside and when you shake the globe, it breaks into the song, 'Holly Jolly Christmas', but it's not Ives singing and that's a little disappointing....OK, a lot, but the detail to the characters is outstanding!

When I stopped by my comic shop today they had the new Rudolph figures out. So far its just re-releases in similar but even nicer (I think) packaging. The front buble of the figures now have some snow on it. I saw Santa, Mrs Claus, Rudolph, Yukon, Hermey, Skinny Santa, Sam and Clarice. Don't know if there were any others.

I'm happy to see Memory Lane is back. I didnt look to see if it still said Playing Mantis on the package or if it said Round 2. That whole thing kinda confuses me. Too bad no new characters though, hopefully we'll eventually see Cowboy and Ostrich and Fireball, etc.

Edit...found a picture of the newer styled packaging:

Ah, here we go, here's the info regarding the whole Mantis/Round 2 thing and what happened, from Time and Space Toys:

RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER- Action Figures
What's up with Memory Lane? To make a long story short, the Memory Lane line which encompasses Rudolph & Peanuts action figures is back in the hands of the same team who created it! After Playing Mantis was bought by RC2 last year, the future looked bleak, but now the original Playing Mantis team is back with a new name, "ROUND 2" and they have re-acquired Memory Lane, so the Rudolph & Peanuts lines will now have a future once again! 2006 will re-introduce the line by filling some holes in your collection and 2007 will build on this strong foundation for many new items.

I've been having to be extremely picky the last couple years in what I can buy because I really don't like to box up the old stuff until it's so worn out that it's unrecognizable. Space or lack there of, is my biggest issue. I actually have hung many of these figures, in their packages on the walls of the 'computer room'. My Dad says Christmas never fully leaves this apartment. :D

Living in the sticks, we have to do a bit of traveling to locate a Toys R Us store and while they have a nice size selection, their prices always seem a bit high compared to other retail stores. When it comes to the rudolph collections, I don't see them in Wal*Mart or K-Mart, these days, except for some of the plush/musical items....now, it's just CVS that I locate the Rudolph collections at.

I think I was late in getting into the Rudolph collecting, as I never saw the stuff, locally, so if Toys R Us was a prime place to find the stuff, I missed out on it all the way around. :(

i have not noticed any changes in the way toys r us does things, i hope these folks have a plan, cause otherwise they are gonna be in the same spot

I don't shop there much, if they don't make it because of a poor business plan then so be it

I received the Series 1 Clarice in the mail today. I already had the newer sculpted one, so I mostly picked it up for the raccoons and rabbits. But it worked out great for Clarice herself too because she's a bigger sculpt and fits in great with young buck Rudolph for when they're older!
