when i go to my sister's at thanksgiving, i will be doing up her new house for the holidays. she has a pool in the backyard and it just occured to me that i ought to get something cool and float-y for the pool. i googled swimming pool christmas decorations and got nothing but a bunch of c r a p. should i google differently? or is this just one of those situations where i am going to need to create my own floating winter wonderlands?

When using a search engine and you aren't yielding useful results, just keep changing up your query with different relevant words and phrases. My quick search yielded some floating colored water lily candles. I'm not sure how that's Christmas related, but I'm sure there's more out there. Try Froogle (Google's shopping search engine).

Kmart and Hobby Lobby have these GIANT bulb ornaments, they would float nicely. Also get a bunch of food coloring and dump it in the pool, red or green. Float some Baby Ruth bars for yule logs

For a party at my parents pool house I took those large rectangular pieces of styrofoam and glued santas, balls, candy canes, etc to them with a glue gun and made all sorts of Chrismtas themed floats.
Put your heaviest decorations in the center so they will float evenly You can even use battery operated lights in them. Use garland or greenery around the sides so that you wont see the block.

thanks carol! i knew i could make some floating wonders, i just have so much to do at her house i was kinda hoping to just find something to buy.....
i have to do the entire outside in the front. the backyard. and 3 trees in the house plus just general festivness all over! and do all this with 6 kids and a gaggle of annoying adults all getting in my way plus doing a chunk of the baking listed on the turkey day desserts thread.

Ohhhhh, I can understand that.
Well then I am gonna wish you luck cuz that is the same reason why I had to make something, I couldnt find a thing. Looks like someone could make a fortune if they would market something like that. Guess I would find some cute inflatable stuff that you could just blow up and float.

You could start with a huge styrofoam iceberg and make the island of misfit toys.
