I agree - good thread!

Georgetown, Colorado in "The Christmas Gift" with John Denver would be my favorite. EVERYONE in town writes a letter to Santa Claus on "letter day" - the post office is closed for all mail on "letter day" except for letters to Santa. Everyone believes. Great movie with beautiful scenery!

Oh - this movie is on of my all time favorites - it's a MUST SEE every Christmas (or any time of the year really!!) There is a sleigh ride scene that I just love! It makes me want to be there!! Lol! I can't say for sure if this was a made for tv movie, or not? It was filmed in 1986 & it still is not available on dvd - only vhs! :( Last year it was on tv a couple times during the holidays. Here is the description on the back of the cover:

George Billings is a successful NY architect. One year ago, at Christmas, his beloved wife died. So now the usually joyous season is a time of painful memories for George & his seven year old daughter Alex. To make matters worse, George's boss, Mr. Renfield, sends him on a business trip to look over a small Colorado town for a possible real estate developement.
When George & his daughter arrive in tiny Georgetown, they discover a charming hamlet where everyone, from the oldest grandfather to the smallest child, believes in Santa Claus. George quickly falls under the spell of the town, and it's lovely postmistress Susan McMillan.
Meanwhile, on the strength of George's glowing reports, Mr. Renfield proceeds with plans scheming to transform the town into a modern ski resort. Everyone, including Susan & Alex, turns against poor George, who has already lost his job in protest. But George wins the town back with his daring plan to thwart Renfield & preserve Georgetown's old-fashioned charm. And when Santa pitches in with a few "miracles" of his own, the town truly has a Christmas to remember.

And here is 1 reviewers comments (from amazon.com) - I think she does a great job explaining:

This movie has been a holiday favorite of mine since I first saw it. I've always been a huge fan of John Denver, his music, and have loved him as an actor as well. I think he really shines in this movie. It's warm, meaningful, and fun as well. It always brings a smile to my face and tears to my eyes, especially as the main character John Denver plays, George Billings, sings a song to his movie daughter about finding love again.

Here is a man not looking forward to the Chrismas holiday season, as he lost his wife a year before at Christmas. He wants to throw himself into his work, get away from his New York apartment and everything that reminds him of his wife and his loss.

He takes his daughter to Georgetown, Colorado(oh how I would love and give just about anything to live in a town like this!) on a "supposed" vacation, which is actually a mission from his slave-driver, money-grubbing boss to search out the "pickings"...i.e., find out if this quaint, beautiful town can be turned into a money-making resort.

What George doesn't expect is to fall in love with this town and it's wonderful residents who all amazingly, from child to oldest adult, have a deep belief in Santa Claus.

I love all the quirky fun characters in this movie. I love seeing the antagonist, George Billing's boss, Mr. Renfield, get taken down a peg or two by the town standing together to keep him from buying out their town. I love Aunt Hennie, her jolly brother Bud Sawyer of Busy Bee cab company, Susan, George's new surprising(to him) love interest, Jake Richards, Scruff, and the wonderful Alex, George's daughter, excellently played by Gennie James. (I wonder what happened to her?).

This movie will always be a favorite of mine, moreso now since I have experienced the same thing as George Billings. 5 years ago, at Christmas time, I lost my husband. Christmas had always been a favorite holiday of ours, along with our son, and losing him at that time was so hard. I lost interest in the holiday for a long time.

Happily now, I have a wonderful new husband of one year and am ecstatically looking forward to the holidays. Yes you can find love again! I am proof of that! And he is awesome! Now if I can just find us a place to live in the beautiful tress with seasons and snow at Christmas, I will truly be in heaven. (big smile)

I encourage everyone to buy this movie and make it a family holiday tradition as I have. It will warm your hearts. Oh yes, I absolutely believe in Santa Claus! =D

Now if only I could find a copy of this move on DVD....

I think I'm gonna have to say "Jack Frost", at their cabin in the mountains. I love the city at Christmas with all the lights, but there's just something about a family, their tree, a fire, and the outdoors; such togetherness.

I'll have to go along with Georgetown. I have the movie on vhs and watch it every year. Sometimes more than once.

Now, I also have to say, 1940's New York in The Bishop's Wife. That was magical. Loved it.

I have two favorites: 1. The town of Pine Tree in a White Christmas and then the scene from Santa Claus 2 where Tim Allen is driving a one horse sleigh down the middle of the street with the snow falling on them.

:gift: Wow, I can't believe I've been stumped.

MrFrosty ~ you should win a prize or something - think I'll give you a little reputation as a reward.

:-?I don't have a reply for this one. Golly, the possibilities. I think I'll have to have a movie marathon tomorrow (thank goodness I'm still on holidays) so I can picture the Christmas town scenes with a little help.

Perhaps though, after a good night's sleep, something will pop into my head. Maybe I'll dream about a scene. That would be nicer than nice.

Holiday - that movie slipped passed me. I'll have to watch for it. Thanks.

Everybody knows I still believe in Santa too.

Maybe it's not so much that I can't answer - as it is a question of which one -which place.

I guess I can't count the North Pole in the Polar Express - it's not really a town. Hmmm. I can't believe I'm stumped.

I know for someone who's stumped I sure went on and on about it. Hey, that's me.

How about the Colorado town in the Christmas Box

Im a huge fan of Elf the movie. One of the better parts was when they were running around NY on their first date and they went around looking at all the decorated windows for the shops, then she pulls him over to the Rockefeller Tree and shows him that, everything is so beautiful!
Now for real life, I went to Catalina Island a year ago, which is a small island off of Long Beach over here in CA, its a small community, well it was the 2nd week in Dec., the town had Christmas lights all over, and during the day it played Christmas music loud on the shops speakers which had a surround sound outside. It couldnt have been anymore perfect.

When I lived in Long Beach, I never got a chance to go to Catalina Island. But I have heard stories about it. One of these days I'll get there.

DoubleA - Catalina Island sounds awesome!!! How festive!

mrfrosty87 -I also like the neighborhood in Christmas With The Kranks!

I am going to have to Watch The Christmas Shoes - I'm thinking I might have taped it off tv last year & haven't watched it yet. My hubby is working nights this week, & 2 of my nieces are spending the week with me - they want to watch some movies - I'm hoping they will want to watch Elf & maybe some other Christmas movies!! :) I have never seen The Bishops Wife either - I have the dvd, so maybe this week we can watch that too!

I would pick Georgetown also, but another good one is the town in "A Christmas Story". Higbees department store window, with the kids looking at the toys inside. Reminds me of when I was a kid. Another one just popped in my mind. A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott; the opening scene with the carolers and festive people on the streets covered with snow.
