Elves gathered early Monday at the North Pole for the 14th Annual Turkey Bowl at the North Pole. The Turkey Bowl is not a football game. It is a charity event. Elves who show up at Santa's Stables by 7am with a frozen turkey are allowed to participate in an usual game of bowling.

Using a frozen turkey as a bowling ball, elves toss their frozen turkey down an iced lane for a chance at winning the prize of flipping on the switch on Thanksgiving night for all the Christmas lights at the North Pole. The annual lighting ceremony is a Thanksgiving tradition at the North Pole officially kicking off Operation Merry Christmas each season.

For every elf that bowls a strike -- knocking down all ten pins -- a name is put into Santa's hat. (Elves are prolific bowlers and most practice for weeks on end for this competition. Almost every elf gets a strike and many names go into the hat.)

Turkeys used in the competition are loaded into Santa's sleigh and then donated to food banks worldwide that distribute them to families in need. This year 14,768 turkeys were donated through the annual event.
