It's Mother's Day weekend and I'd like to take a moment to write this entry as a tribute to my own mother who has been gone for 17 years now. Mom, known by her friends as Annie past away a month before my youngest daughter turned one. That has always bothered me a bit because my older two still have pretty clear, fond memories of the type of person she was but Kelsey does not...that is one of the reasons she so enjoys the gatherings we have, especially with my niece, Christy who is a wonderful story teller and can so capture the fun of being with "Grandma Annie". My mother had a fabulous sense of humor and loved to play. My oldest son still talks about Haggle Foot, the witch who would chase them around the house and try to capture them but somehow they always managed to get to the bed which was safe before Haggle Foot caught up with them. And then Katie still remembers playing dolls with her grandmother and the make believe pirate ships, dinosaurs, and trips to catch penguins. My mother was a strong woman who faced many trials and hardships. She lost her own father at an early age and ended up having to live with her mother and older brother who was very strict and not fun loving at all. Perhaps that is why she so enjoyed life and fun. She was also quite an artist and we have several paintings that she "dabbled at" at she liked to call it. She could take almost any scrap and create something from it. She loved to read and sing...something she sometimes did with my aunt, sister, and niece. Tucked away somewhere is a tape they recorded some of their singing on a year or so before she died. They were laughing more on the tape than singing because one of the other of them were always forgetting the words. I don't think I'm "exactly like" my mom but hopefully enough so that Kelsey can experience a bit of the great fun Grandma Annie always brought into the kids lives!! Seventeen years, it just doesn't seem possible. One thing I know for sure is that death is not an end to love, for it still exists in the memories and hearts of people. So Happy Mother's Day Mom/Grandma Annie...we can feel your hugs and kisses still!!
