Christmas in May?

Posted 05-23-2011 at 09:09 PM by xmas365 (Christmas, Life, and Family)

Here we are nearing the end of May, and as usual my mind is starting to make the turn to Christmas. The hockey season, which was playing during last Christmas is still going and culminating to the championship in a couple of weeks, that has my full attention especially since my team hasn't made it this far in nearly 2 decades. But Christmas is sneaking more and more into my thoughts by the day, I have always seemed to really start to shift to it at this time of the year. I don't know why but for some reason it just sits there, the thinking of Christmas shopping, Christmas lists, decorating (how and what I want to change). Memorial Day is a few days away, and with that the unofficial beginning of the summer, yes we will have cookouts, daytrips, swimming, and so on. Get me to July 4 and I will have had my fill of summer. Christmas, what a wonderful time and as usual I cannot wait for the season to begin.

Of Fear and Faith

Posted 05-21-2011 at 06:56 AM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

I'm in Denver this weekend for a family wedding - always a moment of great hope and happiness.

I am without my bride, an unusual thing, and one cannot help but reflect back on more than two decades of togetherness while at an event like this.

Parenthetically, the world is scheduled to end today. A group of folks has spent considerable resources the past six months or so telling the world that it all ends on May 21st, 2011...at 6:00pm, no less.

I'm not one to be critical of any faith and I think folks should believe what they want in their hearts to believe. I like the idea of embracing truth wherever it is found.

But I see a consequence for things like this. My conduit with the world is right here, in the unsolicited emails we get from worried or needful folks or in the mail that Santa receives from believers of all ages.

And this week we have received a few emails from folks concerned that we've seen our last Christmas....

Posted 05-19-2011 at 01:03 PM by Mumof2

So We finally made it "Down the Bayou" kids and pets were excellent.Im pooped! moved in all the furniture, put some boxes in the barn and slowly going through everything.
House is so cute,My Husband as usual did an amazing job picking it out.My kids and the pup will have plenty of room to roam, plus there's a lil farm at the end of our street that they can go and feed some of the animals. I have been brainstorming as to where im gonna put our tree.
I also have plenty of room to put another tree in the office.im super excited hubby just smiled and the kids laughed.
weather is warm during the day and cool at night.
Its working out better than I thought it would, kids are happy and so am I.

I am with you.

Posted 05-16-2011 at 10:16 AM by gabulldawg

After my lunch break today I was putting my laptop up and found a card tucked away that Brandi left for me to find. She writes and teaches Literature so I am moved and wanted to share it here...it's for when i leave on june 5th.....
I am with you

As I imagine what you are doing, I feel you by my side,
like the morning when you left me, I wish I'd never cried,
for your shoulders were heavy with guilt and lots of sadness too,
Last words echoed inside my head of "I'll be coming home to you".
And there your kiss left mine until some distant day,
to be your last (you promised) that you shall never go away.
So I sit here looking out, on to fields so green,
whilst you have only dessert and views you will have only seen.
But rest assured I am with you, deep inside your heart,
I would always be your strength and angel, you knew that from the start.
To guide you through your dark days and help you...

Home

Posted 05-15-2011 at 03:27 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

Late last night my girls came home.

They left ten days ago, my 25-year old, Aubree, at the wheel of her 15-year old Honda with 160,000 miles on it. Her two teen sisters -- Allie, age 15 and Maggie, age 13 -- providing navigation and good humor all the way.

They left as a birthday/Mother's Day surprise for their grandmother, living some 700 miles away in California.

Was I nuts? How could I allow such a foolish thing to happen? Sending three young women alone across the wilds of Nevada with miles of lonely road where anything could go wrong.

Years ago I made the same trip many times in my little Dodge Colt. Alone. Often on short sleep. And every time with little money in my pocket. Back in those days I could make the drive from Utah to California for $30 one way and more than once I left Friday after work just to see my Mom for a little while before heading back on a Sunday morning. Ten hours -- if lucky and I pushed it -- was...
