Yearning For Christmas of Yesterday

Posted 05-13-2014 at 09:31 PM by xmas365 (Christmas, Life, and Family)

As I am close to entering middle agedness, the thoughts of my childhood are so distant and impossible sometimes.
If I could go back in time to one point of my life and relive it would definitely be a Christmas in the early eighties.
I look back at that time and all I see is a conglomerate of memories of those wonderful Christmases.
I cannot recall a single Christmas as an individual memory, there was always the tree, it was in a different spot each year, there was the waking up in the pre-dawn hours. I know I got from Santa one year "Donkey Kong" for the Atari 2600, another a slot car race set, and yet another a model train set, but what years I don't know.
The thought of reliving one of those years with my mother alive, my father sober, and my parents together would be the biggest Christmas present anyone could get, my eyes fill with tears just thinking of that. The gifts under the tree would be a fun moment but to feel the love of my long lost...

At first I came across diaries I had written when in my early teens and I must say it gave the term "drama queen" whole new meaning but then I was just 15 or younger. There were letters my youngest older brother had written me at a time when he was down on his luck and I was the only contact he had with family. There were plenty of magazines from the 1990s and 1980s and earlier, plenty...

Mrs. Carey's Fruit Cake

Posted 11-23-2010 at 04:06 PM by MerryCarey (MerryCarey's Blog)

Some of you may know that my father passed away in October, leaving me the last surviving member of the family I grew up in. It also leaves me the sole owner and guardian of a well-worn index card that bears a typed recipe with handwritten amendments, and is stained with baking ingredients and years of use.

Fruitcake was never a joke in our house. I suppose I was in high school before I was aware that in many households, Christmas fruitcake was a despised object of ridicule. But not the fruitcake my parents made from a recipe passed down through my family. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, various friends and neighbors never failed to remind my parents: “Don’t forget to save me some fruitcake again this year!”

On Thanksgiving Day, our kitchen was always busy—but not with turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. Instead, our kitchen table groaned with ingredients and a huge roasting pan in which my mother and father compounded the batter...
