I recall how disappointed I was in Josh Groban's Christmas offering a few years back. It too was filled with standards. But he's such an egotistical artist -- much like Celine Dion -- who so likes to hear himself sing that you can't get past the arrangements that showcase "the voice" that it ruins things.
Then, when you turn to something he did such as "Believe" for Polar Express you feel he's made a contribution to holiday music.
That's what I fear for Buble.
He's not got the ego thing going like Groban but some of his traditional Christmas fare so far has been passe -- like he's channeling Frank more than just being Buble.
So cast my vote for a little originality.
I, for one, would like to see an artist brave enough to tackle Christmas themes with an all original album.
Never going to happen though.
