Where did you get your love of Christmas?
Over the weekend my wife and I were discussing our different family traditions and values. In response to something I said about her side, she replied "It's the way you were raised to love Christmas."
That led me to wonder where our love of Christmas really came from. Was it something inherited? Was it the result of a particular family tradition? Or was it something we got in spite those around us being more Scrooge than Santa?
For me, I was raised by parents who enjoyed Christmas, but nothing unusual. But I had a great aunt, who has long since passed away, who would decorate her house from top to bottom every year. She was known to put up her Christmas tree, a stark white flocked artificial, while neighborhood kids were trick-or-treating. Between the first of November and her New Years Eve party, I loved to be over at that aunt's house just to be around her holiday spirit. There was a particular ornament on her tree, an early Hallmark Magic ornament that has Santa and Mrs. Claus popping out of their house to kiss before his long trip, that I would watch for what seemed like hours. Several years ago I found that ornament on ebay and got it to have on our own tree.
I've always loved Christmas, the movies, the music, etc. but I think that aunt gave me the knowledge or courage to love Christmas for more than a few weeks of the year.
