When I think about Christmas, I immediately think of Christmas Eve & all the excitement associated with it when I was a child. Gathering with family around the kitchen table to eat dinner before opening gifts. The kids were so excited we couldn't eat, but we still had to wait on the adults before opening gifts. One year my brother snuck away from the table & peeked into one of his gifts!
Even now, as a 40-year-old, I still get excited on Christmas Eve. I spend the morning preparing for Santa's arrival (hoping that this isn't my last year for that with our 8-year-old DD...) & spend the evening with DH & DD, making cookies or cupcakes for Santa, watching It's a Wonderful Life, then helping Santa deliver the gifts before collapsing into bed at midnight. I think I should go to bed earlier so I'm not so tired on Christmas night!
Other things that I love about Christmas:
-Childhood memories of Christmas programs at church. The smell of a freshly snuffed candle takes me back there.
-Songs. Silver Bells & Joy to the World have special childhood memories attached to them.
-Smells. Cinnamon does it for me. DD has two cinnamon scented pinecones in her room right now & when I pass by I get a whiff of Christmas!
Six months from today, I'll be preparing our home for Santa's visit, whether or not DD still believes or not!
