Christmas Controversy & Opinion Visit Defend Christmas.com Presented by Defend Christmas, this forum covers the difficult topics of the season -- from the famed and fabled War on Christmas to church and state debates to using the star or the angel on the Christmas tree. Modern Christmas celebration has it's complications -- schools are divided, some Christmas light displays are too much, some even argue that it is better to call it a "holiday" tree. Some merchants won't even say "Merry Christmas"! Where there is controversy, there is insanity. Even in Christmas.

Committee to Save Merry Christmas

Have you all heard of this group, The Committee to Save Merry Christmas?

http://www.savemerrychristmas.org/

I've worked with Manny Zamarono for the past couple of years and there is some great news this year about merchants saying "Merry Christmas."

Can you imagine living in Baghdad and getting offended when someone wished you a happy Ramadan? OK, I can't imagine living in Baghdad anyway, but the idea of being offended by someone wishing you well is nuts, even if their holidays don't mean anything to you. We don't have to come up with an all encompassing holiday greeting to avoid offending people and to show how intellectual and tolerant we are; we need to accept the differences and move on. Boy, my soapbox is always close by, isn't it?

I don't mind them if they are voluntary. Happy Holidays is perfectly fine to me. If you mandate it because people are intolerant of "Christian" greetings, then I have a problem. We might as well all wear gray and call each other comrade.

That works around the house, too. If I decide on my own to clean, I'm all into it. As soon as I start getting directives from the boss, the joy is gone and it's time to watch the game.

I'm glad the days of rolling pins and frying pans are over. My neighbor actually conked her son in the head with a skillet. He's no worse for wear. Still intellectually equal to a brick.
