22 16x16 ACLU Threatens Florida City Over Nativity Display

Joseph, Mary and the Baby Jesus have no business posing in a public park even if they’re accompanied by a Hanukkah menorah. “Inappropriate” is the word the Broward chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union uses to describe the holiday display planned for Liberty Tree Park in Plantation, Florida. It’s like Christmas in July, [...]

The ACLU, in a letter to city officials, warned that displaying a Nativity scene and menorah violates the separation of church and state.
The phrase "separation of church and state" (sometimes "wall of separation between church and state"), attributed to Thomas Jefferson and others, and since quoted by the Supreme Court of the United States, expresses an understanding of the intent and function of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. The First Amendment reads "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.

The article goes on to talk about how not everyone is Christian therefore displays should not be allowed in public. But not everyone is atheist, or believes in what the ACLU preaches, yet they feel their views and beliefs should take priority over anyone else's. This group threatens others if they do not do as they want, but I have yet to hear of a nativity scene threatening anyone.

I used to make donations to an organization called Campus Crusade for Christ. Their mission was to get the word of God to those on college campuses. They sent me a copy of a letter the ACLU sent to a professor, threatening his job just because he said "Isn't it neat how God did that?", just commenting how something in nature was made. That was all he said, nothing more. Freedom of speech goes for everyone BUT christians, according to the ACLU.

You'd be interested to know that Campus Crusade for Christ just this week made a major announcement -- they are taking the name "Christ" out of their name because they say it is a "hinderance" to their mission. FYI.

I haven't dealt with them in a very long time, but that is interesting that they did that.

A caring community passionate about connecting people to Jesus Christ.

Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru) is unswervingly committed to proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ. We are committed to the centrality of the cross, the truth of the Word, the power of the Holy Spirit and the global scope of the Great Commission. We care more about effectively proclaiming the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ than we do about having the word “Christ” in our name.
Although the words Campus and Crusade served as hindrances, there was never any intentional decision to remove the word “Christ.” Yet as we considered hundreds of name possibilities, our experience confirmed that Cru would provide greater opportunity to connect men and women with the heart of Jesus, and to help them consider the good news of the gospel.
For those who may be concerned we have lost moorings, please rest assured that we are the same organization with over 6 billion exposures to the gospel through the JESUS film, and who on any given day counts up to a million exposures to the gospel via the internet and face-to-face contacts around the world.
As an organization, we exist for the sole purpose of helping individuals experience the transforming grace and forgiveness of the gospel through Jesus Christ.

That's not how most the media reported it yesterday. I saw this:

Although Cru has no clear religious meaning, leaders are adamant that the word Christ was not removed from the name intentionally.

However, according to its website, "Cru enables us to have discussions about Christ with people who might initially be turned off by a more overtly Christian name."

...and an article like this one: http://content.usatoday.com/communit...l/1?csp=34news

I can understand a "problem" with the word crusade. But c'mon. They are deliberately not explaining the removal of the name Christ.

They sound like a chewing gum now -- a pointless, meaningless name that could stand for anything, almost the exact opposite of where they are coming from.

Don't know much about these guys to be honest but for those who use focus groups and hold elections to refine their identity, I get suspicious.

Well, a couple of things: "separation of Church and State" isn't even in the Constitution. There's nothing in the first amendment about it.

Second of all, the ACLU gets away with this because of money. They have big-time financial backers with very specific agendas and threaten these cities with costly court battles. In these times of cash-strapped budgets, high taxes and deficits cities are hard pressed to do the right thing because doing the right thing just costs too much.

Common sense, what's right and what's fair hardly has much to do with it.
