Memorial Ornaments--what do you think?

I mean the ones that say "Christmas in Heaven" or have a verse and sometimes birth and death dates. Do you think they're touching or morbid? I'm looking at them because my life is recorded in Christmas ornaments, but I just feel weird about them.... Has anyone gotten anything like that? Do you put in on your tree, or do something else with it? Just curious....

I don't think they are morbid. I think it is lovely the remember someone with an ornament. Maybe it feels weird with the date or verse on it...so why not just use a picture ornament?

My sister tragically lost her husband three years ago. He was big into Christmas and decorating with lights. So every Christmas so far she and my neice go and decorate his grave with a little tree and even some lights. Someone once said something to her that it was tacky or something like that but knowing Mike he would have LOvED the idea.

When it comes to how you remember your loved ones I think you should follow your heart.

I don't like the idea, to be honest, of an ornament that says "Christmas in Heaven".

I think I'd personally go for an ornament that reflects something the person liked or collected or an inside joke

Just my opinion!!

I agree with Jeff---"Christmas in Heaven" and dates seems a bit maudlin to me. But I do have a few slip-in-your-own photo ornaments---one of a departed friend, another of a departed pet, a third of my parents doing "Mommy kissing Santa Claus."

I agree on this, too. Mr. and I have an old friend who's resting in a cemetery in our town, and he loved Coca-Cola. When we visit, we take a glass bottle of Coke, toast him, drink to him, and pour the remainder of the bottle on his stone. If anyone ever sees us they'll think we're nuts, but it's our own way of remembering him and sharing a moment with him.

Thanks! Yeah, the ones with the verses do seem maudlin....I like the idea of the picture ornaments though. Or ornaments that symbolize something the person liked to do or collect. The "Christmas in Heaven" sentiment just seems kind of....weird. I'm sure there are people who get comfort from it, but I guess I'm just not one of them. They kind of creep me out, to tell the truth. I'd rather celebrate someone's life on Earth, I guess.

Now, I think bringing Christmas decorations to the cemetery is fine! My grandson Gabriel is buried in the "children's corner" of the cemetery, and it's always decorated for Christmas (and other holidays too!) It makes me smile when I visit his grave.

I like the picture ornaments, but not with dates or "Christmas in Heaven" on them. I like to remember the good times I had with the person, not the times they were sick or to be sad now because they have gone on.

I don't mind the ornaments with verses and dates if other people want them on their trees, but it's not for me. I prefer an ornament with just a picture.

I love the idea. My mother did one a few years back the year my grandmother died with a picture of her. You could do something like that or at least do something on the tree to honor your mother.

I agree that one should follow their own heart in the matter. I like the idea of an ornament reflecting what a person was like or maybe something they loved when they were here. Bronner's has a couple of different ones and as I recall a couple of them are nice.....xo

candysprinkles has shown a merry disposition
My hubby lost his grandmother about a year after we married (around Christmas time) and we chose a nativity ornament from her tree to put up on our tree each year. Years later, when I lost my grandma; we found a nativity ornament on her mantle, also. We put those on our tree each year and pause to remember them. I guess I am not opposed to a memorial ornament with dates or verses...but, I agree with the others that for myself, I would prefer a picture, or something that belonged to them or reminded me of them.
