My Merry Christmas Announcement

Christmas Controversy & Opinion Visit Defend Christmas.com Presented by Defend Christmas, this forum covers the difficult topics of the season -- from the famed and fabled War on Christmas to church and state debates to using the star or the angel on the Christmas tree. Modern Christmas celebration has it's complications -- schools are divided, some Christmas light displays are too much, some even argue that it is better to call it a "holiday" tree. Some merchants won't even say "Merry Christmas"! Where there is controversy, there is insanity. Even in Christmas.

Best Buy Commercials

Maybe I'm just being weird or too sensitive, but I've really taken issue with this seasons Best Buy commercials. There's a series of them showing women at Best Buy, shopping for their family. The sales associate helping them out mentions something like "Santa better watch out, huh?" and then later, there's one that shows a woman sitting in the corner of the room when Santa arrives. She simply stares him down as she gulps down the milk that was left for him. The other one shows Santa attempting to find space to put a toy in the hanging stockings, and the woman starts kind of mocking him talking about how she didn't leave any room for him and how he should give his gifts to the dog.

I hate these commercials. It's like they're making Santa (or the idea of him) irrelevant and unnecessary. Not only this, but it takes the overall commercialism of Christmas to another level. It really makes it look like they're picking on Santa in these commercials and, seeing as how much I love Santa and his legend, I hate that they're portraying him as some unwanted old man who gives lame gifts.

I am so glad you brought this up. I thought it was just me being bothered by this commercial!

I know it's just being silly and I just ignore it but it still bothers me. Maybe I am being silly for feeling that way! I tell myself, "it's JUST a commercial". =)

You are right, he is a legend and should not be portrayed as an unwanted old man. Kids see these commercials.

I never like Santa being portrayed in a negative manner. I guess I take offense like I would if it was my own grandpa. Santa is family to me!

I haven't seen this commerical that I can remember, but I really don't pay attention to them that much - usually when they come on, I am on here in between Christmas specials.

Anyway, I will youtube it tomorrow. I think from what you guys are portraying for me, it sounds like they are making Santa not someone special. That makes me sad. I am for many years to come, going to make Santa a very special part of my childern's lives. This makes me very sad. Shame on Best Buy.

I just talked to my daughter and asked her if she saw the Santa/Best Buy commercials. Before I could say anymore she said, "yes I have and thought of you, I knew you would not like them". She knows me so well!
