We made salt dough ornaments last year and used glitter on them. My daughters made them for their teachers and they loved their gifts!!

This is the recipe we used....

Salt & Flour Clay Dough

2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water

Mix flour and salt together. Slowly add water and stir until it forms a soft dough, all of the water may not be needed. If too gooey, more flour may be added. Roll out on a flat surface to make bread dough cookie ornaments. May be painted with food coloring while still moist. Can be air dried (about 2 days) or baked 1-2 hours at 200-250 degrees. Baked ornaments are less fragile than those which have been air-dried.

NOTE... I let my ornaments stay in longer about 6 hours because we made ours thick.

Christmas Snow Angel,

I will have a go using your recipe too!

Do you think that 3d ornaments could be made using salt dough? Like gingerbread men that stand up etc? OR should I just stick to making tree decorations with them?

I would use a molding clay for the 3d...I have a recipe for that as well. Its close to the recipe I posted above but with an added ingredient.

Homemade Modeling Clay

1 cup flour
1 cup salt
1 tablespoon powdered alum
Water

Mix just enough water to make it smooth and workable. If clay gets dry, mix in a little more water. Store tightly covered.

Yes you can paint on the modeling clay. I've always just formed the clay and let it air dry. Normally two to three days, maybe longer depending on the size. You can find alum in your spices at the grocery store, it's normally used in pickling recipes.

Thanks for the recipes and the link (Cinnamon Applesauce). I had the recipe for the CinnApp, but lost it. The kids really liked making them.

Guess what they'll be giving their teachers this year?!! LOL
