Gifts for the Ex-Boss

Ok, here is a weird one: I was promoted earlier this year over my old boss. I'm not his boss now but I am at a higher level. In years past we have always exchanged gifts, a tradition he started because he's a good guy who believes in giving gifts to his subordinates.

Gifts have always been pretty easy -- a business book, maybe a calendar or such.

I want this year's gift to be something special. A kind of thank you. But I don't want him to view it as anything pretentious. He's a little sensitive about this move, though neither one of us had anything to do with it nor really saw it coming.

Any ideas?

I do not have any advice for a gift, however I have read several posts by you, and I am sure that whatever gift you choose for him will be accompanied by a card with a very well phrased account of your friendship, and that will probably mean more to him than the gift. Just my lil ol opinion!!

I always feel like gifts for co-workers and acquaintances are the hardest to shop for. You don't know what they like, what they already have, etc.

-Food Gift baskets have always been a big hit at my work, we all have a huge sweet tooth.
- A nice or personalized ornament is something that also worked out for me.
