star My darling son

is soon to be 21. He was labeled ADD when he was 8 years old. He is learning disabled, growth delayed and has scoliosis. He was just diagnosed about a year ago with a hiatus hernia. He cannot follow directions very well and when given must be only one at a time, or written down or he will forget shortly after it is given to him. They tried him on Ritalin for awhile but it changed him into a zombie who wanted to sleep all the time so I refused to allow the treatment to continue. He was much better with out it.
But despite all this, he is an amazing young man. He is loving and kind and extremely polite. Right now he is into ventriloquism, self taught, and is doing very well with it. He does a short show for the Sunday school kids almost every Sunday and not people are starting to ask him to come to their kids events to do shows for them too.
He has a girl friend now who has downs syndrome. She is such a sweet heart, a joy to be around.
I tell everyone he is my favorite son and he rolls his eyes and says, "I am your only son mom!"

cmerth has shown a merry disposition
My son has ADHD and he is non-medicated. We have him on a special diet and keep him active. Lots of exercise, good whole foods and lots of one-on-one time with both of us (hubby and me). I homeschool him so that we can take the necessary breaks and learn "actively".

He loves science and math. Struggles with reading. He is very creative artistically (and it calms him down) so we encourage that on a daily basis.

We keep him on a schedule and we don't venture out much otherwise he gets over-stimulated. He does love music but we have to watch that or it gets him all wild (currently trying calm classical music lately to see if it helps his concentration).

It is a challenge but we love him deeply.

My oldest son Gabe turns 7 tomorrow. He's in first grade and he has ADHD and anxiety. He was a very anxious child from birth--very phobic. When he started kindergarten last year, he was suspended twice in the first month. We knew something was terribly wrong. We took him to the doctor, did all the evals, had the teachers do evals, and we were told he had ADHD. He was put on the ADHD med Focalin XR and it seemed to help for awhile and he was seeing a counselor, but he was still having problems like getting very upset and melting down over the smallest things. He was suffering academically and constantly in trouble for hitting, etc. (in total, suspended 5 times in kindergarten!). We went back to the doctor and she suggested a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist was able to determine that Gabe's anxiety was part of the problem and, as ADHD meds act as stimulants, they were basically stimulating his anxiety. To make a long story short, he has come leaps and bounds in the course of just one year. At mid school year last year, he was at a zero reading level. He brought it up to a 4 (the benchmark for kindergarten) by the end of the year. He passed kindergarten and he is doing very well in 1st grade. He aces his spelling tests and reading tests and although math is a little harder for him, it's nothing to be concerned about. He is very smart and very creative. His art work astounds me! He still has focus problems and anger issues, but he sees a counselor once a month and still sees the psych. for medications and weight management (Focalin supresses appetite and can cause weight loss). I am so very proud of him, but I won't say that it has been easy. That whole first year of school I would dread to hear the phone ring because I was afraid it was the school calling about Gabe being in trouble again. It's also very costly for a one income family, even with insurance. But I would not change a thing about the path we have chosen with his treatment. Many people say that ADHD meds stifle creativity, turn kids in to zombies, etc., but this has not been the case for Gabe. He is a bright, cheerful and energetic child and his creativity is FAR from stifled. I know he has a great future ahead of him!
