I found the ornament years ago - it was imported from Poland. I was intrigued by it and asked about it. I loved the story and haave been hanging it ever since! The story I got was that it began as a German tradition. Glad to be a supporter! LOL
Actually, that link has it wrong. While the story of St. Nicholas saving the boys from the "pickling" barrels is a traditional story dating back more than 15 centuries it actually has nothing to do with the relatively modern and some would say bizarre tradition of the Christmas pickle.
This is a great example of how the traditions of Santa Claus and, indeed, the story of St. Nicholas erodes over time and he becomes something he really was never intended to be.
The Christmas pickle, to the dismay of many, is an American invention and has no actual Old World roots. It was, like tinsel and Christmas lights, developed by commerce for the express purpose of taking advantage of the season. There is no real symbolism to any of the traditional icons of the season, such as St. Nicholas.
