holly What is a "Hard Candy Christmas"...?

Dolly Parton's song "Hard Candy Christmas" is a classic (crying in your eggnog) tune.

Does this term have a special meaning or simply lovely song lyrics...?

I'm told that she grew up so poor that, as a child, she only had hard candy (the best kind) on Christmas.

When you think about stories likes that, it's amazing how blessed most of us are really are.

It's when the candy has had a bad childhood and has started hanging around pool halls and carrying switchblades and zip guns... especially those dang Mallo Cups! They're more than hard... they're just plain EVIL..!

I could be wrong, though...

I live about two hours from where Dolly grew up. Brad's explanation makes sense. Back then, one would get a stick of candy & an orange in their stocking and that's about all. That was a treat, because they couldn't afford fresh fruit or candy on a regular basis.

It seems that Dolly's "Hard Candy Christmas" is a metaphor for the rest of her early life. You make do with what you have & don't get down about it.

"I'll be fine & dandy..."
"I'm barely gettin' through tomorrow, but still I won't let sorrow bring me way down..."

Singing a song about it as a way of expressing your feelings can make you feel better about the situation.
