Hello everyone. Just received a new DVD for our collection. Happy Holidays with Bing and Frank--It's a color Christmas Special from 1957. Available from Daedalus Books for $6.98. Who could resist? I'm trying to wait for a special occasion to watch it but I don't know how long I can hold out.

There's an interesting story behind this episode, from a technical standpoint. In the fall of 1957, The Frank Sinatra Show was normally filmed in black and white. But at the last moment, ABC asked that it be filmed in color, as ABC wanted to build up a backlog of color programs in anticipation of the network making its color broadcasting debut in 1958 (five years after NBC and CBS). In any case, the sets and costumes had had been designed for black and white, and they look surprisingly drab (especially for a Christmas show) when filmed in color.
The show was broadcast in black and white in December 1957, ABC postponed its color debut until 1962, and this has probably never been seen in color until this DVD release.

Boy, I'm going to have to suggest waiting to watch it. Wait until you're in the 'right' mood. It'll make it ever more special. As much as I love Christmas movies, I have to be in a certain mood. Wait for a rainy day. A weekend alone. Clean Sheet Day! But hey! I also have super patience and restraint at Christmas time. Really annoys the girlfriends!
