life span of homemade ornaments

Does anyone know how long *old fashioned* homemade ornaments last? How long will gingerbread ornaments stay good? And, do you use a specific recipe for gingerbread ornaments verses what you would use if you were just making gingerbread cookies? Also, how far in advance can you string popcorn/cranberries? I've never done that before but we are thinking we want to do a completely homemade ornament tree this year. We wanted to do it last year and just didn't have the time. I'm worried about the time again this year but it's something we really want to do. Any other kinds of ornaments we should consider making?
