I've had as many as 24 people to buy for at one time in my life, but now, all of us are adults and don't need anything. In all that time, however, even buying for 24, I never spent the thousands of dollars that some say are spending this year. Of course, we didn't have "electronics" back then and not everyone had to have their own tv etc. But still, I find spending thousands a bit extravagant, unless you're a multi-millionaire and you've got college and retirement all set for every member of your family.

I'm with you. I used to work with a lady who told us that she, her two sisters, & her parents usually spent $200-$300 on each other. Really, if you can afford to do that, just buy something for yourself and do token gifts or just gather for a meal. Or, even better, give that money to Toys for Tots or another charitable organization.

Family: 17
Teachers: 7 (Sunday School & School)
Friends: 3 or 4
DH & DD
A few misc., like another teacher who sometimes watches DD after school

So, basically 30 people to buy for.
