Bells Merry Podcast #11 -- Sacred & Secular

We're pleased to announce the general release of Merry Podcast #11 -- titled "Sacred & Secular". Click here to listen or right click to "save as".

This is the kind of episode that will generate a lot of personal email for me. I've received a lot of it over the years whenever we delve into topics that challenge theology or religious history. And we do that in spades in this episode.

We review a new book, published last Christmas, by a scholar from the University of Oklahoma name Brent Landau. He has translated a first century text purporting to be a first person account of the journey of the Magi. The book is called Revelation of the Magi.

The supports the conclusion we've long held here at My Merry Christmas in that Christmas did not begin with the ministry of Jesus Christ -- in fact, it began long before the events at Bethlehem.

In this episode we discuss Christmas before Christ, the connection of paganism to Christmas and how the blended practices of both the sacred and the secular of Christmas actually have their roots in....Jesus Christ.

This is challenging for some to accept. And absolutely fascinating to consider. In this episode we go all the way back to Adam and even touch on the pagan variations of gift bringers who resemble the modern Santa Claus.

The discussion reaches as well into the history of Christmas in the United States and why the observance of Christmas as a holiday is neither a sacred or secular acknowledgement of the season by the government.

We also highlight a new Christmas music release by David Archuleta, who performed last year with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

In all, this is a meaty podcast, full of history and a cast of ancient characters, most of whom you may never have made a connection to Christmas with.

We invite you to read this new article in Christmas Essentials to further explore this topic.

And don't worry, we return to our usual lighter material in the next episode of the podcast, in production now, on the theme of Christmas Comedy.
