How to handle Post-Christmas blues?

I know most of us in the US are still enjoying our Christmas celebrations, but, things are winding down at my house and the familiar feeling of sadness is starting to rear its ugly head.

Last night, while we were getting our sons gifts put out, my husband looked at me and said, "After tomorrow...it'll all be over for another year."

It broke my heart! Every year, after the presents are opened, dinner is consumed and everyone returns to their perspective homes, I feel saddened.

Of course, I keep Christmas in my heart all year, but I am sad that the country, as a whole, is done celebrating this joyous holiday. They stop running the Christmas commercials, stop playing Christmas music on the radio, and people stop being generally "Merry".

I really wish the US celebrated the 12 days of Christmas.

What are some of your tips to make it through the post Christmas blues? Mine typically lasts until either we have a snow day or my DHs birthday at the end of January.

I'm facing the same question myself ... our Christmas film show is over, Mr. is making some Christmas phone calls to friends of his on the West Coast, and I'm relaxing here on the forum, but the clock is making me sad. Only a little more than an hour left before the ads turn into post-Christmas clearance sales and Christmas music leaves the airwaves. Happily, tomorrow our offices are closed, so we can squeeze in a little extra Christmas at home before being thrust into the "real world" where Christmas has been stripped away.

I guess visiting here is the most helpful thing for post-Christmas blues, because we all go through it ... it's the reason some of our members joined, looking for some comfort after the holiday was past. Also, thinking up some projects for the next Christmas---something to crochet, making a list of video clips for next year's video "Christmas card," putting together a set of songs for Merry Christmas Radio. Write a blog entry. Post in the Countdown. It won't obliterate the blues, but it helps knowing others feel the same way and don't consider you peculiar for wanting Christmas to keep going for a while. Anything that will give you a little of that Christmas glow will help to keep you moving toward next Christmas.

I know many people have post Christmas blues. I can honestly say I have never had that.

Right now I am checking things here, enjoying a mug of cinnamon Christmas tea. Rejoicing that Christmas went well this year, we had a lot of fun and had our socks blessed off! We have enough food for a month, left over turkey served in a variety of ways!

The memories of those special moments, when my sister and her husband arrived unannounced all the way from Vermont. Sharing parts of dads sweater with the family bringing tears and laughter as we remembered the man who once wore it. The joy on the faces of my kids when they got just what they wanted! My excitement when I got what I wanted!

Now the house is quiet, I can relax, enjoy my still decorated home and make plan for New Years eve!!

i know this feeling well.

luckily, in the UK, the 26th december is like another christmas day, it's called boxing day and we celebrate it. everyone seems to keep their decorations up until atleast 1st january and christmas films are still on tv for a few days yet, so that keeps me going. i still feel very festive until new years day.

once january comes i get sad, but i start thinking about the next christmas and what i'd like to do differently and how amazing i will make it. coming on the forums helps and i plan to start my official build up a little earlier in 2012.

You said that well, thrust into the "real world" where Christmas has been stripped away. Isn't that the truth! Some say, "don't feel sad because it's still in your heart. Sorry but I enjoy the overload of Christmas surrounded around me by the commercials, movies, the media (good Christmas stories!), overly decorated stores, the hustle and bustle, the music playing, friends and family feeling Christmasy. After Christmas you hear from so many, "I am so glad Christmas is over"! Bah humbug to them! Ha ha! I guess I love Christmas "shoved" in my face!

When it's the 26th the whole world has put the breaks on it, the music stops, the streets start going dark, you see Christmas trees on the curb and it's over!

It's pretty natural to feel a bit "let down" after all the furious activity... but, I think that's more just your body readjusting to it's usual level of functioning... a chemical reaction... in these days of CD's, DVD's and Blu-Rays Christmas music and specials need never end! Not like the 60's when I grew up and when it was over, it was OVER!

Christmas tunes in March... Rudolph in June... sounds good to me!

You CAN!!! In the words of Nike, "Just Do It!" Even better if you start a new tradition of celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas that go through January 6th.

There are several things I do: Listen to Christmas music year around on MMC and Live 365, save the Christmas magazines to read AFTER Christmas, try out the recipes from the Christmas magazines to use NEXT Christmas, scrapbook/journal my Christmas, plan projects for Christmas gifts for next year, start adding gifts to my Christmas stash for the following year, keep notes of the preferences of family and friends, and visit the forums daily--especially the Countdown.

I will continue to celebrate Christmas at least until Epiphany even though it seems the rest of the world is ready to get back to the old grind. I struggle with the blues after Christmas every year but it doesn't seem to be hitting me as hard this year for some reason. I'm getting older and the years come and go much faster it seems so I know that before we know it, it will be Christmas time again! I am thankful for this forum to keep my spirits high and my sights on Christmas so Thanks to everyone here who shares my love of this wonderful season! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
