candle countdown for Christians

I am always looking for more ways to focus on Christ and the true meaning of Christmas during the holiday season. Do any of you have ideas on how to incorporate that as part of a daily countdown in December? We have done daily scriptures/devotionals, we have put straw in a manger for good deeds done during the month of December, we have tried a Joshua tree, etc. But I still feel like I haven't found "the one" tradition yet. We try to have daily scripture reading as a family year round, so scriptures will definitely alway be part of it....maybe a specific scripture chain or something? Any ideas???

Thanks!

hey there. we used to make a b-day cake for Jesus & sing happy birthday when my kids were small. on Christmas Eve night i like to read the Christmas story from the book of Luke now that they are older.
not sure if you are on Pinterest but on there I found a list of small things to do for others during Christmas. after all sharing His love is what it's about. good luck in what ever you may find to do. the fact that you want to do something speaks volumes.

We light our Advent wreath leading up to Christmas and say a prayer with it. Kind of our yearly tradition.

Not that you were all looking for a report but..... (: (: (:

I think I decided this morning what I will be doing this year. I think I am going to make some glitter ornaments I saw on pinterest, where the glitter coats the inside of a glass ball ornament (in pretty colors) and then you can write on the outside of the ornaments. I will make 25 ornaments, one for each day of December through Christmas day, and I am going to write a different name or title for Jesus Christ that is found in the scriptures. For each ornament/name, I will include the scripture reference and put that in our daily countdown calendar. As a family, we will read and discuss the scripture of the day, figure out what name/title Jesus is referred to, and then hang the ornament with the same name/title on the tree. If/when possible, we will also do a family activity that goes with it. For example for "Light of the World", we will make beeswax candles. For "Bread of Life" maybe we can make a special Christmas bread (ie eggnog bread). For "Good Shepherd" we could make candy cane cookies and talk about the symbol of the shepherd's crook, etc. For "exemplar" we could talk about Christ always serving others and then we could do something as a family to serve someone else (ie angel tree, sub for Santa, taking goodies to neighbors, etc.)

The more I think about it, the more excited I am getting so I think I'm just going to go with it and start planning so that everything is ready to go by Dec. 1.

Thanks for the ideas. And if others read this thread and want to add to it, I'd love to hear more about what other people do to focus on Christ during the holiday season.

I know a few people who make it a point to have a Yule log party sometime during the month of December. I believe it was a European custom to bring in a huge log on Christmas Eve, then the head of the house placed it on the floor of the fireplace and said prayers. Nowadays, the people that I know will have a Yule log cake, cookies, eggnog, and hot chocolate, things like that. Instead of just saying prayers, they will also sing religious carols, read verses, tell stories, etc. It sounds not only fun, but a nice tradition to start.
