A friend that I graduated high school with, Robbie, took his own life this morning at his home. Robbie was a distinguished firefighter for years, but damaged his spine on the job. He has been unable to work for more than a year and has been in a great deal of pain, and was despondent about it. He was put on anti-depressants recently, which have been know to cause suicidal thoughts.

Robbie was married to the same girl since high school, and they have two college-age children. I spoke with him for just a moment 6 days ago, but I was in too much of a hurry (as usual) to stay and talk very long with him.

Robbie was a consistantly good guy. When my dad retired from the Army and we moved back to Georgia from California in 1978, Robbie was one of the very few who didn't pick on me for my San Francisco clothes and speech. He was always friendly and ready to talk, even though he was one of the football greats.

Everyone I've seen today is either crying or on the verge of tears, myself included.

Bless your heart, Robbie. You will be missed terribly, my friend.

Robbie's funeral was yesterday afternoon, and it was one of the most touching I've ever been to. He was a firefighter in Savannah, and a first responder here at home, so he had a HUGE turnout of emergency people.

He was taken from the church to the cemetary on the back of a fire truck, ecorted by a bagpipe player and followed by a dozen firetrucks. There was an honor guard, the fire chief from Savannah spoke, the 911 dispatcher called over the radio that Firefighter Robbie Jernigan, who had served his family and community in heroic fashion was "off duty" and "on standby". Then a trumpeter played "Taps" as his casket was lowered. His wife was presented with the flag that was on his casket, and was folded in a military manner. Then she was given his firefighter's helmet. Not a dry eye in the place.

Wow.

Robbie was a great guy who was faced with a pain that the doctors were unable to alleviate. It's sometimes easy to say that we would never do that, but I've never been in his shoes. Whatever his reasoning, I believe that he's at peace now. Godspeed, my old friend.

Brad I cannot tell you how sorry I am for your loss and the loss of Robbie's family. I am so sorry this happened. As a survivor of suicide, I can tell you that it is going to be so hard for his loved ones. I am sure he was absolutely miserable and tormented and that is what is led to this. I am also positive that he is at perfect peace now with Our Father........xo

Such a lovely funeral for such a lovely person
No one knows what goes on in the human mind.
But hopefully he can find the peace with god he could not find on earth
Hoping in time his family can except his death and have peace within there selfs

He recently found out he has cancer, and is already in a lot of pain. So much, if fact, that he cannot rest, even with strong pain medicine. He went for a PET scan Friday, and they expect results tomorrow or the next day.

Although he and I aren't best of friends or anything, this has hit me like a ton of bricks. Steve's a great guy with a wonderful family. It breaks my heart as a father. I can only imagine how afraid he is, knowing he might not be able to be here for his son as he grows into a man. That would be my greatest fear; not being here to guide my children and watch them grow.

Thanks, my friends.
Sorry to quote myself, but Steve is getting worse by the day. None of the treatments have helped, and he's in even more pain.

Just two months ago, he and his wife stopped by my hospital room after my heart attack to check on me. He looked pretty good then, and I was touched (and a bit ashamed with myself for not having taken better care of myself while my friend is struggling just to stay with his family). But these two months have been hard on him. He's lost so much weight & strength, and all of his hair, and nothing seems to help. I can't help but cry while I type this.

I'd appreciate a few more prayers for my friend, Steve Rogerson, his wife Paula, and their son Mark.
