We have a pre-lit tree and I gotta tell you guys, the lights just don't hold up. Maybe on some trees they do but our last pre-lit tree, one light went out and it caused the entire strand to go out. I definitely like the pre-lit trees since it is easier than stringing the lights but I think I'll be stringing them this year, lol

The unlit tree that I ordered online is supposed to arrive today. I'm hoping to unpack it and take a good look at it this weekend. I'll let you know how it is. If you like, I'll post or PM the link to the website---they have a fair number of unlit trees available. However, they are premium trees with premium prices. (I didn't mind paying, because I use an artificial tree until it starts to fall apart! and I'm very picky about its not looking too phony.)

I had a pre-lit tree and it burned out completely in 2 years. I dumped it and picked up one that wasn't lit from Wal-Mart for $19 at the end of the season. I won't do pre-lit anymore because they burn out way too quickly.

Actually I bough a pre lit tree in 2010 because everyone told me how much better it was.....I thought it was pretty and all but this year the middle section would not work,I tried everything but it would not work..I ended up going to walgreens to get some to string up...Lord knows what will happen when I put it up next year...but I will keep my fingers crossed. It burns me up to spend that kind of money on a tree that starts fallin apart after 2 years!!!!

My converted tree (used to be a pre-lit tree, I had bought a prelit tree and cut all the lights out of it), is working like a champ with all the light strands that I had put on myself.

I did hear one complaint from my wife, she didn't like the way the christmas light wires looked draped all around the tree.. I have to admit, those factory workers in China, sure do a really good job of tieing all those wires to each branch so you cannot see them....

I did a little research on the Internet before my unlit tree arrived this year. The secret seems to be to wrap the light string around the branches---which also helps to light up the tree from the inside and give it a "glow." There are some YouTube videos (including one from Bronner's) that demonstrate how. I did mine that way, and I only had to tie down the wires in a couple places where I plugged a new string into the previous string, in order to hide the plugs back toward the trunk. Plan on using plenty of lights if you do it this way.
