Until last year, I managed a restaurant in a mall for 14 years. So essentially, from about November 15th on, I had no life at all outside of work.

For that reason, my season always started November 1st. I gave Halloween its fair celebration (I do love it, after all!), but the decorating and celebrating began the very next day for Christmas. I put up 5 trees in the house, so I did one on Nov. 1 and then one each Sunday in November after that. The last one that went up was a live tree that we would go cut down the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

I loved coming home from work late at night after a 12-13 hour day and being able to just sit in the dark, next to the lit tree and either watch a Christmas movie or listen to a cd. The ultimate in relaxation.

Now, that is the official start of the season for me. I do listen to Christmas music off and on through out the whole year, though. I try to take a break during October at least so that I can enjoy autumn and also not be completely burnt out by the time December hits.

From around October , Christmas is very much on my mind. I start thinking about preparations , ideas etc and start to get the house ready by finishing any DIY or deep cleaning by mid November.

Celebrations start gradually from around mid november for me. The christmas movie and music channels start their christmas programmes around then and that's usually my cue. The town lights and decorations go up around that time and the christmas market opens around that time too. By the last weekend in November I will have all my decorations up and the tree will follow the weekend after. Then it is christmas maddness in our house! Non stop christmas music ,films and seasonal treats like mulled wine, minced pies, spiced rum, fruit cake and more. We love engaging in all the festive fun in the lead up to the big day!

I start thinking about Christmas in September. I usually listen to holiday music on and off from September until December. Around September/October, I begin making Christmas lists for my family members. I also begin to look up Christmas decorations. When I have the money, I love to decorate my Christmas tree in different themes every year. I don't normally decorate the house until about two weeks before Christmas. We always get a real tree, so if it's any earlier than that the tree won't have that fresh pine scent by Christmas.

I'm also the only real Christmas nut in my family. As soon as I start mentioning Christmas plans in September, my grandma says it's too early. Personality wise, I'm just a planner though, and I even plan Halloween. She also claims it's too early in September for Halloween too. My little brothers don't mind however, and they get excited when I make their Christmas lists in October. My mom is just indifferent and is happy as long as I'm happy. For me, the official start of the holiday season, is when I start seeing loads of Christmas commercials. That's usually about two weeks before Thanksgiving. For my family (more like Grandma), the holidays don't start until Thanksgiving weekend.

Christmas Tree

It may sound funny but hunting season always started my decorating for Christmas. Here Buck season comes in the Monday after Thanksgiving, so I always started putting up my trees that day. It helps to keep my mind from thinking about my hubby and son out in the woods with other hunters who are carrying guns. And as the years have gone by, I now have grandsons and son-in-loves to be on my mind also.

Outside decorating is always done before Thanksgiving when the weather is warmer. I don't do Halloween so I may start outside before this month is over.

One year when my daughter was a newlywed, her home was decorating for Christmas during the Halloween time, she doesn't do Halloween either. Both my girls love decorating and start about the same time I do.

But I just bought a new Christmas cd and of course I've been playing it, LOL, hubby just rolls his eyes but lets me play it in the car. He knows I love Christmas.

I usually start my celebration November 1st. Sometimes I sneak some Christmas music in during October, but I'll switch over to pretty much all Christmas after Halloween. I take November 1st off from work every year to go look around the stores and see all of the Christmas merchandise. Sometimes my wife and I will start our shopping that day too.

It's coming up...next week! Can't wait.

I start missing Christmas by about September...Then I'm usually list-making and looking up DIY decorations/thinking about how I want to decorate the apartment! My mom just informed me that this year my boyfriend and I are hosting Christmas so now I'm even more excited to start decorating, etc Normally I get the tree up and start decorating around Thanksgiving weekend but I've got the bug this year and I may just start the beginning of November since I doubt I'll have time to decorate since my b-day is early December...Oooh and I always watch Christmas movies, doesn't matter the time of year!

I always have Christmas on my mind and count down each day until that time of year, but as far as decorating and such, we don't begin that until mid November. I do begin listening to Christmas music non-stop from 1 November until the first week of January. Perhaps I should decorate earlier so I can enjoy it for more than just a month and a half (though my HOA would frown upon us decorating prior to 15 November).

The entire holiday season is about family, friends & being thankful for our blessings & I love it all!!!

I have been thinking about "when it begins" the last few days. My family spends a lot of time together but the holidays are always a little more special because my brothers Mike & Bill & wives come home. Mike always comes home for Thanksgiving & Christmas - Bill comes home only for Christmas as he lives 1000 miles away! We lost Mike this year - so even though I have so much Holiday spirit & I am already decorating, I am so excited & I love it all, in the back of my mind I am asking myself "when is it going to begin?" Usually when I walk into the family Thanksgiving party, the 1st thing I do is give Mike a hug b/c I haven't seen him for awhile & it's a feeling of relief - Mike is home, everyone (minus Bill, who calls later) is together, life is good. Holidays have begun! I think it will be an emotional holiday! But we will get through it & we will will enjoy & smile & laugh b/c that was what Mike always did & he wouldn't want us to do anything different!
Wow..I didn't mean to be such a downer. This thread just got me thinking more about it I guess!!! Really, I think I will enjoy the holidays even more this year b/c we have to enjoy them while we can! Tomorrow is not a guarentee!! So lets celebrate every minute from now until the Christmas after the next Christmas after the next Christmas...!!!

Some people think Thanksgiving is cheated in some way, because many people look at it as the beginning of something (countdown to Christmas), and not its' own holiday. But I don't think that's true at all.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful day: food, family, parades. It stands quite well on its own. Just because it doesn't pull the same weight as Christmas doesn't mean it isn't appreciated.

The Holiday Season (in the US) starts at Thanksgiving and ends on New Year's Day. So, Thanksgiving ushers in the Season, while New Year's Day ends it. And for that, I say "God Bless them, everyone!" (with my deepest apologies to Mr. Dickens)

So, It is quite natural to begin celebrating Christmas at Thanksgiving, because Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day all work in tandem to create our wonderful Holiday Season; and, let's be honest, Christmas is the apex of the Season.

I'm sure Thanksgiving and New Year's Day are perfectly content being bookends to the Christmas celebration.
