Judge Sides with Atheists, Santa Monica Christmas Will be Christian-Free
The atheist movement has won in Santa Monica, California — offsetting a recent defeat suffered in Texas. As we have covered here over the past two years about the Christmas controversies in Santa Monica the fight there came as a result of a beleaguered City Council who just could not make anyone happy. When atheists [...]
It saddens me that some people just have to ruin everyone's fun. I just wrote a paper about this and I have to admit that I'm disgusted. There was a Jewish rabbi who was very disappointed with the atheists for trying to destroy other people's happiness. He actually said that it was in poor taste and he praised the city of Santa Monica for having a lot of menorah displays in the city. If those atheists were comfortable with their own unbelief in any kind of God, they wouldn't have to come in and make a point. Seventy-eight percent of Americans are Christian. Although, that has been changing slightly, the majority of Americans, including some very kind atheists, still celebrate Christmas. I feel that what the atheist did was wrong to bring sadness and anger to a season that is supposed to be promoting peace on earth.

This is largely happening thanks to the Freedom From Religion Foundation, an atheist group that does NOT represent all atheists. We have many atheists here who celebrate Christmas who would likely have strong things to say about this group's tactics. They are going to battle all over the country, and have been for years. In some places, like in Texas, they are losing. In others, notably California and Michigan, they are winning. Just depends on the judge and how out of hand things have become.
I will say this: the city council in Santa Monica tried to make it fair...to a point. But as is often the case, they have better things to spend their time on and they lack the money to handle these court cases. The FFRF knows this and that is why these things end up in court so often. In fact, just by threatening lawsuits in some areas of the country they end decades-long traditions of Christmas display in a lot of places.
