Christmas Decorations Christmas is a hands-on art. From the lights we put on the house to the decorations we put on the tree to the great foods we eat in the process, Christmas is a time of doing -- and this is the place we gather to talk, plan and share.

Themed Christmas Ornaments...

In another part of the site I read about Themed Christmas decorations. It reminded me of something a little off kilter, but it is themed.

I'm a biologist. A really sad/disheartening three-month episode resulted in a theme that has now persisted for 15+ years.

I got an emergency call on dead/dying ducks one day. The short of it was that there was an avian botulism outbreak that had proven lethal to several hundred ducks for months. Another surprise was that it ended up in the newspaper. A little gallows humor ensued from other bio friends. At work for months duck stuff started ending up on my desk (anonymously of course). Later that year at Christmas duck gifts were left by Santa on my desk, then ornaments, etc. While it has lessened over the years, I still get duck Christmas stuff as the story has made it to each successive workplace (not from me). Over the years I have donated all the toys to charity. However, I kept the ornaments...especially the handmade stuff. The ducks theme has really become birds in general...but weighted towards ducks and geese. Weird the way it happened, but I do like them. Below is a picture of several I received last year...now how about YOUR stories???

We're film collectors, so while our tree isn't all one theme, I have a number of film-related ornaments. A friend made us an ornament with Thelma Todd's picture on it; I have a tiny sled labeled "Rosebud" ; a little multicolored snake (see "We're No Angels"!); a little locomotive (see "The General"!); and I'm probably forgetting a few.

We're also working on a Christmas music theme. Not too far in yet...just a few things. Just got a Johnny Mathis Christmas ornament.

Have also started to amass enough train stuff for another tree but also not a long way into it yet.

I keep thinking about a northwoods theme as well.

My tree has several different themes too - I am a registered nurse. Hallmark comes out with a themed nurse ornament every year and my parents have been getting me that ornament since I've become a nurse, so I have quite a few of those.

DH is a firefighter, so he has quite a few of firetrucks and different things to do with firefighting.

Over the years, I've also collected snowglobes and Precious Moments, so for the majority of the other ornaments, that is what is one our tree. We also have other types of ornaments, but those are the "themes".

My theme is kind of generic. It's just rustic. Lots of wood, Metal, earth colors, felt, and hand made ornaments.

Made, we have similar tastes! Google "rustic Christmas Pinterest" and you will see tons of pin boards filled with that style! Love it!

My husband is a musician so we have a bunch of guitar ornaments. We love tin stars so we have quite a few too.

I have an eclectic mix of ornaments from my childhood to ones I bought with my roommate. I am into sports so I have a small collection of sports ornaments as well. I love my sport's ornaments but nothing says Christmas to me more then an old fashion ornament.

Steinbach (German wooden ornament & nutcracker maker) has made several nurse and firefighter ornaments in the last few years...probably nutcrackers as well.
