Good question, other than using thumbtacks...it's hard to get lights to stay up. So I too did some browsing online and came across these ideas....

I use the 3m Mini hooks in our living room and none of them have fallen yet. http://www.amazon.com/Command-TM-Adh...5245312&sr=8-1
They are supposed to come off clean as well. You should be able to find them at WalMart/Kmart where ever pretty cheap.
One note, you're supposed to put them up and let sit for like 20 minutes before hanging anything from them. They work great though.

I have used a LOT of those mini hooks, but not for lights. I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit this, but I have a pretty extensive Hotwheel collection, and I have in the past used the mini hooks to litter entire walls with them. If they can hold a Hotwheel up, they can certainly hold a strand of lights. I've only had maybe two of them fall, but it was undoubtedly because of the surface... not the adhesive's fault. I've never waited to hang anything off them, either.

Some of them do tend to get stubborn on removal, though. I've had the tabs break off so that they have to be scraped off, I've had a few pull chunks of paint, and I've had many of them snap back and wrap my knuckles.

I don't know. Mine were up for about a year before I took them down and redid the drywall. After all that work, I never put them back up.

Wal-Mart, Kmart, Drugstores, hardware stores, just about anywhere I would guess.
