light Want to feel Christmassy? Chop some Firewood!

I've been chopping wood the last few days and it made me think of cosy Autumn and Christmas nights the whole time, the smells are just wonderful.

I didn't have a fire of my own before last year and its been the best project I've ever done. Not to mention rising gas prices so I can turn my heating down.

For those who think they cant have a wood burner its now possible to have them in pretty much any building with an external wall including apartments. Obviously check local regulations.

Has anyone else been chopping or preparing wood?

It's been a while since I chopped wood for a fireplace. Too much work! Now we have gas logs. I did run the chainsaw yesterday, though, cutting up a broken tree limb.

I have a full size, brick fireplace. I got typical go thru a cord or two of wood in a Fall/ winter. However, last year, I only used about a half of an cord.

I like to split firewood by hand (splitting axe, mall, wedges), but for the past few years I have been buying slab wood from a local mill, because I didn't have the time to fool with it. I can get from the mill, in one truck load, 4 cords of either oak $400.00 or mixed wood for $350.00.

But, your right, I miss being out there on a cool/ crisp fall day (where your not sweating to death and or the mosquittos are chasing after you), just chopping firwood for a few hours....It's a good workout plus it was always somewhat peaceful being outside doing that~

You're right its a good workout, not too hard when you use a maul (heavy wider axe) and I agree being outside on a nice Autumn day chopping is really great.

We have a wood burning stove in our family room, and its one of the best purchases we have made. We've been very lucky in finding wood to burn, and I can't remember the last time we actually had to pay for wood. Recently a friends daughter had some trees cut down, and they gave my husband the wood. We have a log splitter, and my husband has wood stacked on the side of the house, and other places in the yard.

we had a fireplace when the girls were small, but not here
I used to chop wood for campfires, but have not done that for awhile either. (to many brothers who do it all now)
I would love to have a fireplace again.

Good to hear other folks are enjoying their fires and burners.

I would love a fire place, I really would. We have a nice electric one but it's doesn't compare to the ''raw'' feel of a real fire.

I love that wood burning smell. With the rise of fuel I really should look into whether it's possible for us to have one.

We have a fireplace and have the gas logs in it, but I'm thinking about taking them out and making it a regular fireplace. The husband went wood cutting and gathering the other week with the neighbors. We got enough for the Church and a family in need as well as for us and the neighbor family. Bring on the snow!
