I am so glad I live in Massachusetts, retail stores are forbidden to be open on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Some of these old blue laws are really worth having. The local Kmart here opened on Thanksgiving about a decade ago, but I believe the state really cracked down hard on them. Employees are not even allowed to be in the store on those 2 holidays, if they are the stores will be fined very heavily.

I liked Black Friday when it seemed 'special', like going to the stores in the wee hours of the morning was kind of weird and fun. Now it's just getting out of hand, and I feel so bad for those that must work Thanksgiving. For this reason, I will not shop on that day, plain and simple. Even if the workers don't celebrate the holiday, they should still get the day off.

FWIW, I saw this article on Boston.com this morning. It includes a poll that shows (as of this time) that, in answer to the question "Should Black Friday sales begin on Thanksgiving?" 93.33% of respondents chose "No way. Thanksgiving is for family," while only 6.67% chose "Absolutely. My family loves a good deal!"

I worked at a Video store for 4 years back in the mid-90's, it was open 365 days a year because they were classified as "Entertainment" instead of retail even though they sold toys DVD's, VHS tapes, CD's, video games, food, books, and magazines. The holidays were the most depressing time because we were required to work Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Day, New Years Eve and Day.
The worst Thanksgiving I ever had was while I worked there. I got home, all my family was gone, my grandparents made me a plate of food, but all the good stuff was gone. I feel horrible for the people that have to work on Thanksgiving, can we just have a few days that all stores can remain closed?
