Sometimes it can be a welcome interruption to other thoughts and sometimes I think I'm going Christmas batty.
A handful of Christmas Songs get stuck in my head - not ones I consider my favorites (a few of them would make my top 20).
Is it because the lyrics are simple and repetitive themselves? Is it a Christmas lyric brain freeze? Is it some smell or sound that sparks a memory and then the song jumps in? Was someone else humming the same tune and I didn't pay attention to it at the time?
I dunno, but there they are wrapping their lyrics or melodies around my brain refusing to let go - sometimes just the same verse over and over and sometimes the whole song . . . playing as if it's on the radio - sometimes with a different performer. For the most part these are the usual songs (and performer's versions) that get stuck in what I call a dose of Christmas Song Flu
Driving Home for Christmas, Chris Rea
Here We Come A-Wassailing, the Muppets
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, The Peanuts Gang - Vince Guaraldi
A Holly Jolly Christmas, Burl Ives
Mele Kalikimaka, Bing Crosby
Here Comes Santa Claus, Gene Autry
Celebrate Me Home, Kenny Loggins
Jingle Bell Rock, Bobby Helms
Sleigh Ride, Johnny Mathis (or the Ronettes)
We Need A Little Christmas, The Muppets
Winter Wonderland, Frank Sinatra
Jolly Old St. Nicholas, Andy Williams
Zat You Santa Claus, Louis Armstrong
Christmas in Killarney, Irish Rovers
I Yust Go Nuts At Christmas, Yorg Jorgensen (really)
Hard Candy Christmas, Dolly Parton (OíMalley cries like a she-cat when he hears that one)
Let it Snow! Frank Sinatra (even if I don't want it to snow anymore)
In the daytime, it's not so bad, something will happen (like work) to get the song out of my mind without passing it onto someone else, but at night when I'm trying to sleep - ouch!
So, which Christmas tunes get stuck in your head (even if theyíre not your every day faves)?
