Department 56?

Does anyone collect Department 56 items? I just went to a Boscov's here in Maryland and the store is closing. They dont have much left in the store but they do haev a good amount of Christmas things. They had several Department 56 houses 70% off. I have always wanted some and never been able to afford them. I bought myself 2 and am just thrilled..now I have to wait to put them out =0( lol

That's awesome! What exactly did you buy? I believe I have a few Disney things. I too wish I lived closer. I'd buy up all the Mickey stuff.

I just bought 2 of the village houses (north pole edition) that light up. Im going to do a little village on my mantle this year. I already have a few houses from lemax but didnt have any from Department 56 until now.

I'm so jealous! I love the Dept 56 houses, but I can't afford them.
I want to start collecting Lemax this year. Is there a huge difference in quality between the 2 brands?

Hi there, honestly for the money I would go with Lemax. I have a few Lemax houses (Halloween ones also) and I think they are really nice for the price. We have a Michaels craft store here (not sure if they have them where you live?) but they often have 40% off coupons and I have gotten a few of my Lemax houses for under $20 which you cant beat! If they arent on sale they usually run between $30 and $40 a piece. The Dept 56 ones are painted a little better but who in the heck is going to look at every little detail? If it wasnt for me getting the 2 Dept 56 houses 70% off I would have never gotten them because I think $75 - $100 a piece is just way too expensive..good luck and if you end up getting some houses you will have to post some pics!

Thanks!
We have a Michaels not to far away and I will have to keep my eyes open for those coupons.
You answered my question perfectly!

About ten years ago I was really big into Dept 56. I think there IS a big difference in the quality. Anyway, truth be told, I have more buildings than I have space to display them. We have recently re-done our living room and this year we're going to make a better display than we have in years. I'm already laying track for the train.

In recent years, I've seen Dept 56 get a little more...um, greedy. I do not like much of their new stuff.

At that level of detail you've got to be Mikey-steady hands.
