how to treat a cold

Hi fellas,

sorry to bother You guys....but my two-year-old and I have been hit with a terrible cold....I can cope with it....but it breaks my heart to see Kandice cry all the time and just be sick.

Besides an inhalator '(she needs it, cos she was terribly sick at the age of 3 weeks....beginning pneumonia) and is close to being Asthmatic.....and some nosespray...

now my question...do You have any tips how treat it additionaly? I mean...old house curing and stuff like that....I hope You know what I mean...sounds really weird.

I would be very gratefull if You could give me some hints how to make her feel a little bit better.

Oh I am so sorry to hear that you and Kandice aren't feeling well.

Do you have echinacea? It is an herbal remedy - I usually take 2-3 echinacea capsules per day when I have a cold. Or I will substitute and have some echinacea tea. It works wonders, I promise.

Drink a lot of fluids - water, orange juice, hot tea with honey. I try to drink 16 oz every 2 hours when I have a cold. It really flushes it out.

And lastly, rest. I don't know how you can do it with a 2-year-old, but try to put in some nice films or children's shows (Winnie the Pooh works well and is calming for kids and adults).

Get well soon!

We get lots of rest, eat chicken noodle soup and drink hot tea. A hot shower helps too.

Zinc, Vitamin C, Vicks Vapor rub, LOTS of water, lots of sleep and chicken noodle soup. When I say lots of sleep, I mean at LEAST 10 hours per night with naps in between. Sleep gives your body time and energy to fight off whatever you're fighting. Water helps keep you hydrated and cleanse your body of toxins. Zinc and Vitamin C are great ways to shorten the length of your cold.

Vicks Vapor Rub is an old, old remedy which helps many people. After Momma gently rubs it on the chest, be sure the little one is well covered up in warm pajamas with t-shirt underneath. (Unless she doesn't like the smell of Vicks. Most children seem to be comforted by it. But don't force it if she doesn't want it.)

If you never allow soda, this would be a good time to offer ginger ale. The unusual treat might get her to drink a little more. Also, lots and lots of popsickles - the cold seems to sooth the sore throat.

Saltine crackers, goldfish crackers, any cracker she might nibble.

Ice cream - any treat that she wants, to keep her eating.

Lots of cuddles and love for the baby, it does help. Read her some stories and watch cartoons/kid shows with her. As for eating/drinking, I would suggest, applesauce, orange juice, crackers, popsicles or ice pops, chicken noodle soup (even just the broth from the soup would be fine). Vicks VapoRub for Babies (click here) on her chest with a warm wash cloth over it may help with any congestion.

For momma, much of the same as for baby, though add some hot teas and vitamin C in there.

Also, for both of you, don't drink milk or consume dairy products. If you have a chest cold it can add to the congestion and thicken any mucous.

Hope you feel better soon!

Hope you both are feeling better by now.

I take echinacea and I have not had a cold or the flu in well over 5 years, I'm not kidding.
I use to get severe sinus infections, I no longer get them. It's been over 5 years.
My husband also takes echinacea and he does not get sick. I swear by it. It will boast your immune system that is constantly being attack by germs, our environment and foods we eat.

Also, drinking plenty of water helps keep our bodies in balance.

Track Rebel ,I'm sorry to hear that you and the little one are feeling under the weather and do hope that with the tip's and such that people have given here that you both are feeling better .

I know that it always upset me when my children were sick as babies .I mean no one wants to see them sick period ,but when their small they can't get much sleep if they are stuffy and can't breathe. My son was really bad as he has asthmatic bronchitis.

BIG HUGS to the both of you.
