"Gifts In A Jar" Recipes

I posted these in another thread, so I figured I might as well post them under the "recipes" thread too!


Apricot - Pecan Snack Mix
1/4 C. Packed brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp. medium-heat chili powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 ts. ground cumin
2 cups bite-size shredded wheat squares
1 C. thinly sliced dried apricots
1 C. pecan halves

1. Stir together brown sugar, chili powder, salt & cumin in small bowl. Pack brown sugar mixture into 1-quart food storage jar with tight fitting lid. Top with cereal, apricots, & pecans.
2. Seal jar. Cover lid with fabric circle, if desired. Atach gift tag & fabrid to jar with raffia or ribbon.

Attach following recipe to jar:

Apricot Pecan Snack Mix
3 Tbsp. Unsalted butter, cubed
1 Tbsp. fresh lime juice
1 jar Apricot-Pecan Snack Mix

1. Preheat oven to 325º. Line shallow baking pan with foil.
2. Melt butter in large heavy saucepan over low heat. Stir in lime juice. Immediately add contents of jar. Stir over low heat about 3 minutes or until sugar melts & ingredients are well coated.
3. Spread mixture in prepared pan. Bake 12 to 16 minutes, stirring halfway through.Cool completely in pan on wire rack. Store in airtight container in cool place. 16 servings.


Carrot Spice Muffins
3/4 C. all purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground cardamom
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 C. whole wheat flour
1 C. chopped walnuts
1 C. raisins
3/4 C. sugar

1. Layer ingredients in 1 qt. food storage jar with tight-fitting lid in following order: combined all-purpose flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, cardamom, & ginger; whole wheat flour; walnuts; and raisins. Place sugar in small plastic bag; seal bag. Add to jar.
2. Seal jar. Cover lid with fabric circle if desired. Attach gift tag & fabric to jar with raffia or ribbon.

Attach following recipe to jar:

Carrot-Spice Muffins
1 jar Carrot-Spice Muffin Mix
2 Tbsp. unsalted butter, softened
1 egg
3/4 C. applesauce
1/2 C. shredded carrots

1. Preheat oven to 350º. Grease standard (2 1/2") muffin cups or line with paper baking cups; set aside. Remove bag of sugar from jar. Place remaining contents of jar in large bowl; mix well.
2. Beat butter & sugar in medium bowl with electric mixer at medium speed 2 minutes; beat in egg until blended. Stir in dry ingredients, applesauce & carrot just until dry ingredients are moistened.
3. Fill prepared muffin cups with batter. Bake 15 - 18 minutes or until toothpick inserted into centers comes out clean. Cool muffins in pan on wire rack 5 minutes. Remove muffins to wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.


Minty Holiday Candy Cookies
3/4 C. granulated sugar
3/4 C. packed brown sugar
2 C. all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 C. holiday-colored candy-coated chocolate pieces (such as M & M's)
1/3 C. chopped peppermint candy or 1/2 c. mint-swirl chocolate chips

1. Layer ingredients in 1 qt. food storage jar with tight-fitting lid in following order: granulated sugar; brown sugar; combined flour, baking powder, baking soda & salt; chocolate pieces, and peppermint candy.
2. Seal jar. Cover lid with fabric circle if desired. Attach gift tag & fabric to jar with raffia or ribbon.

Attach following recipe to jar:

Minty Holiday Candy Cookies
1 jar Minty Holiday Candy Cookie Mix
1/4 C. (1/2 stick) butter, softened
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla

1. Preheat oven to 350º. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper; set aside.
2. Place contents of jar in large bowl. Using fingers, work butter into flour mixture. Combine eggs & vanilla in small bowl. Add egg mixture to flour mixture; stir until dough forms.
3. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; place balls 3" apart on prepared cookie sheets. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until cookies are golden. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheets. Slide parchment paper & cookies onto wire rack. Cool completely. Makes 2 1/2 dozen cookies


Hot & Sweet Energy Snack Mix
1/4 C. packed light brown sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground ginger
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/16 tsp. ground red pepper
1 C. dried cranberries
1 C. almonds
1 c. dried sweetened banana chips
1 C. roasted unsalted soy nuts

1. Combine brown sugar, salt, ginger, cinnamon & red pepper in small bowl; mix well. Pack sugar mixture into 1 qt. food storage jar with tight-fitting lid. Layer remaining ingredients in following order: cranberries; almonds; banana chips; and soy nuts.
2. Seal jar. Cover lid with fabric circle if desired. Attach gift tag & fabric to jar with raffia or ribbon.

Attach following recipe to jar:

Hot & Sweet Energy Snack Mix
2 Tbsp. unsalted butter
1 jar Hot & Sweet Energy Snack Mix

1. Preheat oven to 300º. Line large shallow baking pan with foil.
2. Melt butter in 12" nonstick skillet. Add contents of jar. Stir over low heat 2 minutes or until sugar melts & ingredients are well coated.
3. Spread mixture in single layer in prepared pan. Bake 20 - 25 minutes or until mixture is lightly browned, stirring halfway through. Cool completely in pan on wire rack. Store snack mix in airtight container in cool place. Makes 16 servings.


Spiced Citrus Tea
1 package (about 2 sq. yards) 100% cotton cheesecloth
12 bags green tea
6 (3 inch) cinnamon sticks
1 Tbsp. whole cloves
2 Tbsp. finely chopped crystallized ginger
1 Tbsp. each dried grated lemon peel and orange peel
2 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. each ground nutmeg & ground allspice
3 yards kitchen string, cut into 9" pieces

1. Cut 12 (5 - 6") squares cheesecloth (double thickness); set aside. Remove any wrappings and strings from tea bags. Place 1 tea bag on each square of cheesecloth. Add 1/2 cinnamon stick, breaking into small pieces. Divide cloves between squares, about 10 cloves each.
2. Combine remaining ingredients except string in small bowl. Divide mixture equally between squares, 1 round tsp. per square. Bring corners of squares together, tucking in loose edges. Tie bags tightly with string. Place bags in 1 qt. food storage jar with tight-fitting lid.
3. Seal jar. Cover lid with fabric circle if desired. Attach gift tag & fabric to jar with raffia or ribbon.

Attach following recipe to jar:

Spiced Citrus Tea
1 Spiced Citrus Tea Bag
boiling water
1-2 tsp. orange juice
honey (optional)
orange slices (optional)

1. Place tea bag in cup or mug. Pour boiling water over tea bag; steep 3-5 minutes. Remove tea bag, pressing out liquid. Discard tea bag.
2. Serve with orange juice & honey, if desired. Garnish with orange slices. Makes 1 serving.


Blondie Dreams Mix
1 C. packed brown sugar
1 C. all purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
2 C. old fashioned oats
1/2 C. butterscotch chips
1/2 C. white chocolate chips

1. Layer ingredients in 1 qt. food storage jar with tight fitting lid in following order: brown sugar; combined flour, salt, baking powder, & baking soda; oats; butterscotch chips; and white chocolate chips.
2. Seal jar. Cover lid with fabric circle if desired. Attach gift tag & fabric to jar with raffia or ribbon.

Attach following recipe to jar:

Blondie Dreams
1 jar Blondie Dreams Mix
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, softened
2 eggs
1/2 C. sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp. vanilla

1. Preheat oven to 350º. Grease 9-inch square baking pan; set aside
2. Place contents of jar in large bowl. Using fingers, work butter into flour mixture. Beat eggs in medium bowl; stir in sweetened condensed milk & vanilla. Stir egg mixture into flour mixture until well blended.
3. Press mixture into prepared pan with rubber spatula. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. Cool completely in pan on wire rack. Cut into bars. Makes 2 dozen bars.

Breakfast "Candy" Bites
1 C. sweetened flaked coconut
1 C. chopped dried dates
1 1/2 C. puffed rice or puffed wheat cereal
1/2 C. chopped dried apricots

1. Layer ingredients in 1 quart food storage jar with tight fitting lid in follwoing order: coconut; dates; cereal;and apricots.
2. Seal jar. Cover lid with fabric circle if desired. Attach gift tag & fabric to jar with raffia or ribbon.

Attach following recipe to jar:

Breakfast "Candy" Bites
1 C. crunchy peanut butter
1 jar Breakfast "Candy" Bites

1. Line baking sheet with waxed paper or parchment paper
2. Place peanut butter in large bowl. Add contents of jar; stir until dry ingredients are well coated.
3. Shape rounded tablespoonfuls of cereal mixture into balls; place on prepared baking sheet. (Dampen hands for easier handling.) Refrigerate bites until firm. Store leftover bites in airtight container in refrigerator. Makes 3 dozen bites.

Seafood Seasoning
1/4 C. each coarse salt & celery seeds
4 tsp. ground red pepper
1 Tbsp. each dry mustard & black pepper
2 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. each ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg & ground allspice
1/2 tsp. ground cardamom
3 bay leaves

1. Combine all ingredients except bay leaves in small bowl; mix well. Pour into 1/2-pint food storage jar with tight fitting lid. Slide bay leaves along inside of jar.
2. Seal jar. Cover lid with fabric circle if desired. Attach gift tag & fabric to jar with raffia or ribbon.

Attach following recipe to jar:

Crab Cakes
1 pound backfin crabmean, picked over & flaked
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/4 C. chopped green onions
1/4 C. mayonnaise
2 Tbsp. lemon juice
1 Tbsp. Seafood Seasoning
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1/4 C. olive oil

1. Combine crabmeat, egg, green onions, mayonnaise, lemon juice, Seafood Seasoning, salt & pepper in medium bowl; mix well. Shape mixture into 12 cakes, using 1/4 cup crab mixture for each. Place on large plate; refrigerate, covered, 30 minutes to 1 hour.

2. Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat. Cook crab cakes in two batches 3 to 4 minutes on each side until browned & internal temperature reaches 170F. Makes 6 servings.



Yogurt Topper Mix
1 egg white, at room temperature
1 1/4 C. raw pumpkin seeds
2 Tbps. + 1 1/2 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. ground ginger
1 1/2 C. chopped pitted dates
1 1/4 to 1 1/2 C. high protein, high fiber breakfast cereal clusters

1. Preheat oven to 250. Line baking sheet with heavy duty foil. Lightly spray foil with nonstick cooking spray.
2. Beat egg white in large bowl until frothy. Gently stir in pumpkin seeds, sugar, cinnamon, salt & ginger until seeds are well coated. Spread mixture in thin layer on prepared baking sheet. Bake 30 minutes, stirring once. Cool completely on baking sheet on wire rack. Break into bite size pieces.
3. Carefully arrange candied pumpkin seeds in 1 qt. food storage jar with tight fitting lid. Tom with dates & cereal.
4. Seal jar. Cover lid with fabric circle if desired. Attach gift tag & fabric to jar with raffia or ribbon.

Attach following recipe to jar:

Yogurt with Topper

1 jar Yogurt Topper Mix
1 cup vanilla yogurt

1. Place contents of jar in large bowl. Stir gently until well mixed.
2. Spoon 1/4 cup topper mix over yogurt; stir, if desired.

Note: Return remaining Yogurt Topper Mix to jar. Store in cool place. The jar yields about 18 servings.


Trail Mix Cookies
1 C. all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. each salt, baking soda & ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ground cardamom
3/4 C. whole wheat flour
1/2 C. old fashioned oats
1/4 C. each chopped pistachio nuts & chopped whole almonds*
1/2 c. sweetened flaked coconut
1/4 C. each raisins, white chocolate chips & chopped dried apricots
1/2 C. each granulated sugar &packed brown sugar
*Two tablespoons pine nuts may be substituted for 2 Tbsp. almonds.


1. Layer ingredients in 1 qt. food storage jar with tight fitting lid in following order: combined all purpose flour, salt, baking soda, nutmet, & cardamom; whole wheat flour; oats; combined nuts; coconut; raisins; chips; and apricots. Place sugars in plastic bag; seal bag. Add bag to jar.
2. Seal jar. Cover lid with fabric circle if desired. Attach gift tag & fabric to jar with raffia or ribbon.

Attach following recipe to jar:

Trail Mix Cookies
1 jar Trail Mix Cookie Mix
1 C. vegetable shortening
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla

1. Preheat oven to 375. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper; set askid. Remove bag from jar.
2. Beat shortening and sugars in large bowl with electric mixer at medium speed until light & fluffy. Beat in egg & vanilla. Add remaining contents of jar; stir or mix with hands until crumbly dough forms and ingredients are evenly distributed.
3. Shape dough into 1 1/2" balls; place 2 inches apart on prepared cookie sheets. Slightly flatten balls to 2 1/2" in diameter. Bake 11 - 13 minutes or until edges are lightly browned & centers are set. Cool cookies on cookie sheet 5 minutes. Remove to wire rack. Cool completely. Makes 24 (3 inch) cookies.

1. Layer ingredients in 1 qt. food storage jar with tight fitting lid in following order: combined flour, baking powder & salt; brown sugar; granulated sugar; and chocolate chunks.
2. Seal jar. Cover lid with fabric circle if desired. Attach gift tag & fabric to jar with raffia or ribbon.

Attach following recipe to jar

Caramel Chocolate Chunk Blondies
1 jar Caramel Chocolate Chunk Blondies Mix
1/2 C. (1 stick) butter, softened
2 eggs
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/3 C. caramel ice cream topping

1. Preheat oven to 350. Grease 13 X 9" baking pan; set aside.
2. Place contents of jar in large bowl; mix well. Beat butter in another large bowl until smooth. Beat in eggs & vanilla until blended. (Mixture may appear curdled.) Add dry ingredients to butter mixture; stir until well blended.
3. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan. Drop spoonfuls of caramel topping over batter; swirl into batter with knife. Bake 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool in pan on wire rack. Makes 2 1/2 dozen bars.


Mocha Brownie Cookie Mix
1 1/2 C. all purpose flour
1 Tbsp. instant coffee powder
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
3/4 c. packed brown sugar
3/4 C. granulated sugar
1/3 C. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 C. chocolate chips

1. Layer ingredients in 1 qt. food storage jar with tight fitting lid in following order: combined flour, coffee powder, baking powder, baking soda, & salt; brown sugar; granulated sugar; cocoa; and chocolate chips.
2. Seal jar. Cover lid with fabric circle if desired. Attach gift tag & fabric to jar with raffia or ribbon.

Attach following recipe to jar

Mocha Brownie Cookies
1 jar Mocha Brownie Cookie Mix
1/2 C. (1 stick) butter, softened
1/4 c. sour cream
2 eggs

1. Preheat oven to 350. Place contents of jar in large bowl; mix well.
2. Beat butter & sour cream in another large bowl until smooth. Beat in eggs until blended. (Mixture may appear curdled.) Add dry ingredients to butter mixture; stir until well blended.
3. Drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 9 to 11 minutes or until almost set in center. Cool cookies on cookie sheets 2 minutes. Remove cookies to wire racks. Cool completely. Makes about 4 dozen cookies.

I love to give these as gifts to my kids teachers,bus drivers dance instructors and their sensi's..who doesnt like to get cookies,soups or browines? thanks for more ideas!

star Love doing jar mixes for gifts

I have book called "Holiday Jar Mixes" and it is full of all kinds. Everyone on my list is getting some kind of mix this year.
Thanks for posting these recipes, I am going to try the seafood seasoning mix.
