Christmas Card/treat for neighbors

Do you all put Christmas cards/treats in your neighbors mailboxes? Some of our neighbors travel so I'm afraid to put a perishable item other than a candy in their box. Last year, we went out of town after Christmas and a neighbor put some baked goods in our mailbox and came home to find moldy treats (mild climate).

Last year I put a candy cane attached to a card. Anyone else have other ideas? I just would like to put something small with a card.

I usually take a tray of Christmas treats to the disabled couple that lives in the apartment across the hall.

WE exchange christmas cards with most of our neighbors. WE're very friendly with the family on our right side, so we buy a gift for the little girl who is 6 years old.

Where we live, it is actually "illegal" to put anything in peoples' mailboxes. They are only for mail through the post office. I leave a wrapped plate of treats and a card between the storm door and the front door -- IF I know the family is in town. Or, ring the bell and give it to them in person. (But I don't "pop in".)

Same here.
I usually go and ring the doorbell of my neighbors doors and if they're there, then good, if not i'll wait a couple of days and try again, hoping to spread christmas joy!

Yes it's illegal to use the mail box for anything but mail but, I used to deliver mail and that was one thing I really looked forward to. I used to get cards with money in them, ornaments, gifts, candy, cookies, etc. It was great. If you know your letter carrier and they are cool with it you'll be fine. If your letter carrier is strict then don't leave anything or else they'll probably take it out. As for what to leave neighbors, well I don't know. Aside from taking things to them personally I guess just a card and something non perishable. Maybe little ornaments with your cards depending on how many people you give to.

star my son wants to do

something we have done before for the kids around here. We sneak up to the homes late at night on Christmas eve (we live in a townhouse complex, so it is easy to do) Each bag contains one sugar cookie for each kid at the house. Then, when that is done, exactly at midnight he plays a recording of sleigh bells and Santa going ho ho ho.
The one year he did it several lights came on around the place, some front doors opened. People looked around expectantly. They found the bag of cookies and laughed in delight. The kids talked about Santa coming for weeks. It was really fun to do.
It is a lot of work however, but I think worth doing again.
