I like their original Christmas album best. (I've had it ever since it was a cassette.) Did you know that several of the arrangements are taken directly from the Spike Jones Christmas album? (This was after he became more mainstream and less of a comedy/novelty band.)
The CD is called Christmas Portrait. I've never seen the one made after her death.

OK, this may get me kicked out, but I do not like this one song they sang on that CD, in fact it is the one song I just do not like to hear at all - do you all hate me now!!! I like the other songs, and it is good, but I guess not my cup of tea so to speak... The song I don't care for is one that she is singing to a lover who is not longer with her, they broke up and she is wishing him a Merry Christmas anyway. Maybe it is because on this one station I listen to they play that song a lot.

Please don't hate me

I think the song you are thinking of is "Merry Christmas Darling." For some reason the radio stations play a different version than on the CD. If you listen to the CD version you might like it better. The words are the same but she sounds different.

We don't hate you! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion!

I believe you're thinking of "Merry Christmas Darling"...I've heard that the song was actually written in the 1940s (but not recorded until the Carpenters did it, for whatever reason); the singer is thinking of her sweetheart who is overseas fighting in World War II. It works if you listen to it that way. Sort of the home-front version of "I'll Be Home for Christmas."

Edited to add: I found this on the Internet at http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=3808: "This was the Carpenters' first attempt at Christmas music. The lyric was written in 1946 by Frank Pooler, who was the choir director at California State University, Long Beach. Karen and Richard Carpenter were both part of the choir. In 1966, at Pooler's request, Richard composed the music for this ballad, which was first released in 1970. This sparked the interest and idea of a Christmas album by The Carpenters, and on October 13, 1978, Christmas Portrait was released."

I never knew that, it does take on a whole different meaning, I will need to re-listen to it with an open heart.
