Retailers Think Christmas ‘09 Might Be Better

Life isn’t exactly peachy in the world of retail but Christmas 2009 looks far less dismal than 2008. Consumers will be able to find bargains — and retailers themselves may just be a little busier. Eastman Kodak today said in talking with their biggest customers orders look good for the Christmas season.Chief Executive Antonio Perez [...]ShareThis

Yeah, but when? A week before Christmas? Christmas used to be a two month season for retailers. It has recently dwindled from two weeks to about 10 days. It was an epic disaster across the board last year. Lots of customers doesn't mean they were buying lots of stuff.

It's rough in KY and WV too. I think this will be a very lean Christmas, as far as gift buying goes. Our largest industry is coalmining, and we have had numerous layoffs in the mines, and several total closings of mine operations....which also trickles down to the truck drivers, construction workers, etc. There are hundreds of miners out of work in this area.

I was one of those customers that did not buy lots of stuff but was out "window" shopping a lot. We were on a tight budget last year but had the best Christmas ever!!! Low on funds had no effect on the Christmas spirit for us.

Hubby's 2nd job is working at Lowes and they have their highs and lows but for the most part they are extremely busy.

Also, online shopping was the way many decided to go. I saved alot of gas by shopping online plus I found great bargains.

I agree..... we tend to do our shopping early and try to be done by Dec 1st. Those great deals they had right before Christmas did not do us any good and we had already completeled our shopping and did not have the money for anything else. We cut back on spending last year and plan on cutting back even more this year.
