Christmas Decorations Christmas is a hands-on art. From the lights we put on the house to the decorations we put on the tree to the great foods we eat in the process, Christmas is a time of doing -- and this is the place we gather to talk, plan and share.

tree Xmas Tree Preserving

Not sure if this is the right section! But as I started to ramble in another thread...I realized what a great idea it would be to share ideas with everyone else.

Here is where my rambling started!

The downside is I like to keep my tree a few weeks into January and a real tree dries up so fast!

I have tried the preserver that many of the tree lots sell, and it works pretty well.

I have always wondered - though it would be a pain - if the tree would last longer if you took all the decorations off and recut a piece off the bottom of the trunk? Has anyone ever tried that? I know when you first get your tree, you are supposed to cut a piece of the bottom.

I heard that your tree will last a month as long as you cut about a half inch to an inch off the trunk and put it in water right away. Just curious if the tree life would last slightly longer if you recut it a second time down the line? I heard after you cut it, within hours, the sap covers the spot where you cut it.

I also heard drilling holes into the base/sides of the bottom of the tree and keep the water level above them, can prolong the trees life.

I am curious if anyone else has tried other things that have REALLY worked to keep your tree nice and green! Perhaps we can learn some new things!
