A Christmas Story-Jack Nicholson

I am sure a lot of you Christmas Story fans have heard this before about the role of the old man (the kids father) being offered to Jack Nicholson. I just learned of it about 6 months ago reading an article online. Here is the article I copy and pasted:

The part of the Old Man (the kids father) was originally offered to Jack Nicholson, who reportedly was interested in playing the part. Director Bob Clark, however, lobbied hard for Darren McGavin. The producers, worried about Nicholson’s typically large salary requests, eventually approved McGavin.

Would you think he would have been good at this role? Are you glad that Darren McGavin got the role instead? Just curious what everyone thinks.

Myself, I am so glad the movie is just the way it is. I think Darren McGavin is excellent in his role and just cannot see anyone else playing the old man. Every time I watch A Christmas Story I try to imagine Jack Nicholson playing that role and I don't feel it would work. Nothing against Jack Nicholson, he has done some great work and, who knows, he might have been excellent as the old man.

I don't much care for Jack. I can't picture that movie any other way so I'm glad that Darrin got the part.

Could you picture Jack's reaction when the leg lamp got broken. Next thing you know he is chopping through the bathroom door with an axe, and sticking in his head and saying "Heeeeere's Johnny!" Nah doesn't work for me.

Haha! Now I will think of that every time I see that lamp broken!

Never cared for Jack Nicholson. He is a good actor (if you like to watch him in movies)but I just do not like him.

I'm glad Darrin McGavin got the role. He was perfect for it.

Very funny way to look at it!

I agree. Jack doesn't seem to be right for that part. I think the old man would be too intense and almost scary.

I don't think it would have been nearly as good if Jack had gotten the part.

The only thing I like with Jack Nicholson was Wolf and I agree Darren is best for the part. Nicholson would have probably unintentionally taken over the movie and it would have ruined it.

snowberry (who thanks Jesus for talented actors)
