Christmas Controversy & Opinion Presented by Defend Christmas, this forum covers the difficult topics of the season -- from the famed and fabled War on Christmas to church and state debates to using the star or the angel on the Christmas tree. Modern Christmas celebration has it's complications -- schools are divided, some Christmas light displays are too much, some even argue that it is better to call it a "holiday" tree. Some merchants won't even say "Merry Christmas"! Where there is controversy, there is insanity. Even in Christmas.
Boston Area School District Changes Christmas to Winter
It is becoming more and more a common practice for a school district to change the word “Christmas” to “Winter” on calendars. Even though the holiday is federally recognized, school boards cite political sensitivity while never exposing just who is offended by the use of the word Christmas. The latest to do so is a [...]
This news being from my home state, is nothing new for us. When I was growing up it was known as Christmas vacation, now it is winter vacation, and has been that way for a number of years now. The town I live in is also the only school around that goes to school on Good Friday.

I am not real religious. For me, Christmas isn't about religion..it never has been as that is how I was raised. But thats not the point...
The point is..WHO CARES. We called it Christmas, we called it Halloween, we called it Easter. All schools here get these days off..it was Easter break..not spring break. I think schools have become WAY too PC about "Everyone should be included and not offended." Well, I am not offended!! In elementry school, we had a Christmas party. Watched a Christmas movie, we decorated our classroom with Christmas stuff. These poor kids going through school are going to be so jaded with the spirit of the Holidays that they are going to have to rely on their parents to instill some tradition and spirit. I mean that is fine, but I just think it's silly. Call it winter, it's still Christmas and everyone knows that. I understand if you don't celebrate it, but don't participate in the festivities if you don't. I think it's that simple. Either that or educate people about the other holidays INCLUDED in christmas but call it what it has always been...Christmas.
Even in that story, someone mentioned...they are not religious but still call it Christmas. It's the name... it has always been. I think we get too far away from more simple times, especially with technology. I love technology don't get me wrong, but its taking over too many things. Tradition and love for holidays is just so important to my life and most of the other kids I went to school with because we celebrated the holidays at school. Over the years, I have seen more and more people not into the spirit. Verbally saying they hate this or that, or hate Halloween...or whatever they hate about the holidays. I think too many people are relying too much on technology and have not recieved the same taste of tradition and holidays of the past. Thank gosh there are many of you out there who carry the spirit over into your children.

I remember when in my last year of High-School (which was 2006) Our school was banning the word "Christmas" so there couldn't be anything like "Merry Christmas" or "Christmas Break" It was called "Winter Break" and a lot of the decorations that were put up had to say "Happy Holidays"
