It's good that you were able to feel that way--I think everyone reacts differently depending on them and the circumstances. My current husband couldn't stand to celebrate Christmas at all the year his mother died, but he seemed to take comfort in the Christmas holidays the year his father died. As long as nobody's trying to force the person to feel jolly, I think people come out of sad Christmases okay.

My sad Christmas was back in Dec 23, 2001, when my grandmother passed away. She was sick and it was really hard to try to celebrate Christmas, and it also is my son's birthday on Dec 25, and he was only 9 years old and I did'nt want to show my sadness on his birthday, but we all tried our best.
I hope anyone that ever had a sad Christmas has a very Happy one this year, it is extra nice to be able to talk to everyone here that loves Christmas so much. Thanks Christmas lovers

I have sad moments every Christmas when I start thinking about my loved ones that have passed on and remembering the fun times that used to be but then I have to turn my focus on the fun times and people I have with me now and be thankful

In 1993 my Grandfather (Dad's father) passed away on December 2nd. His Birthday was Chrismas Day... I was only 11 years old at the time but I remember how weird it was not having him around and celebrating his Birthday as well as Christmas. I also remember how upset my Dad was.

Also in 2006 I was very pregnant with my 1st Son (he was due the end of January). I had just moved into a new house, had 2 cats who destroyed my Christmas tree and a boyfriend at the time (my Hubby now) who was driving me nuts haha. I know it sounds selfish but I think from being overwhelmed with everything I was just not myself and wasnt very happy that Christmas.

I Am soo sorry for everyones loses, but happy to hear that everyone has rekindled their happy spirits in present times

I believe the saddest christmas for myself & my family was when my Great-Aunt Marilyn passed away.. To this day Christmas eve dinner, still feels a bit... out of balance??

Another sad christmas, was not for myself.. but my sister. Her Pet bunny passed away Christmas eve, in her arms. I felt so bad for her.. She had cried so much that day.

1981---my maternal grandfather died two days before Thanksgiving & was buried on Thanksgiving Day. Instead of having Thanksgiving dinner at his house, we were at the funeral home for his service. That Christmas we had the gathering at our house instead of my grandmother's house. I was 8, my sister was 5, my brother was 1.

I don't know if my brother & sister knew something was wrong, but I knew. The adults tried to be happy for the children, but I would catch them crying and hugging each other at times.

Yesterday DH took all my family home movies & put them on DVD for us. I just realized that everything Christmas of my life from 6 months old to probably 11 or 12 years old is on there except for Christmas 1981. I guess they were too distraught to even bring the video camera out. I think the only picture my mom took that year was of the kids standing in front of the tree. Even thinking about that Christmas is sad.

My maternal grandmother died February 2005. She had been sick for almost six years. Christmas of 1999 at her house was more sad than 2005, because she was sick & probably didn't even know it was Christmas. She always got more excited over Christmas than the kids did. Over the years she was agitated by a crowd of people in her house once a year, so we started having Christmas at my parent's house (next door to her), and have her sitter stay with her for a couple of hours.

I don't recall any sadness Christmas 2005----my sister had a 2 yr. old & a 9 month old, & I had a 6 month old. Christmas has been lively ever since!

Oh my gosh I have something else to add and I dont know how it slipped my mind.. every Christmas Eve we used to go to my step grandmother's. She passed away right before Thanksgiving in 2000. I didnt realize how much I enjoyed going over there until she passed away.. my family still went over that 1st year (she had already bought and wrapped everyones gifts) so it was special but also sad at the same time since she wasnt there...but after that everyone stopped having it.. her kids sold her house... we go over my In laws now but I always think about those fun times I had going over there each year on Christmas Eve. Change is hard..especially when you do it for so many years in a row..its a tradition that is broken..and its hard to adjust to that!

Mine would be this past Christmas! It was sad but also happy! This was the first Christmas without my dad! He passed away the last of September. Then exactly 2 weeks from the date we buried my dad my brother had to be put in the hospital he was very sick. He had pneumonia and was very dyhydrated. They had to give him 5 bags of fluid. He missed four weeks of work. So we were sad for dad but happy my brother was back to him self. We did not have the money to spend on Christmas because when my brother is out of work he does not get paid but we were together and had food and that is what counts!

I've been sad more than I wanted too the last 2 Christmases...Two years ago, I didn't get to see my kids from my ex wife for the holidays for the first time since they were born because I was away in training for an upcoming deployment. Then when I returned from that deployment right before the holidays, my wife at the time left me and my ex wife took my kids out of town so I didn't get to spend the holidays with them for 2 years in a row...Hoping this year will be better...

This last Christmas was very sad and difficult for me. I had been pregnant and due at the beginning of December. As a Christmas nut, I was SO looking forward to my own little Christmas blessing and enjoying the season with my sweet baby. Unfortunately, at 4 mo. pregnant, my baby died and I gave birth and buried my little boy, Gabriel.

When Christmas time came around the pain was unbearable. All I could think about was how this Christmas would have been perfect, if only my baby hadn't died and I could have been sharing it with him. It was painfully evident that my arms were empty and that just made the holiday so hard. I spent much of the time crying and not sure how to move on.

The days are getting easier despite going through another m/c a couple of months ago. That baby would have been due on Christmas eve this year. This loss has not been as hard, probably b/c of it being much earlier than the last one. I hope to have a much better holiday season this year and take the time to honor my babies while still enjoying the time of year that usually brings me more joy than anything.

~Laney
